X-Fi Surround Headphones Question

UPDATE: So I got the card now. But I am not sure as to how I should set the audio in the games. In HL2 and Doom3 should I set it surround or stereo? I have CMSS-3D enabled for my headphones, so does that mean I need the surround setting?

I have read several reviews on the card. But there's something I wanna know about the headphones surround feature. When you enable it, do you set your game's audio settings to 5.1? Or do you set them to headphones and the soundcard takes care of the rest?
I mean does the card get 3D info and output that info to the headphones creating a 3d sound illusion, or does it get 2d info and improvise on it then create the 3d illusion?
I am getting the card soon, and I was curious about this thing.
Thanks

It's not a hardware thing but actually just the latest revision of CMSS, which can be installed with some hacks to the rest of the Audigy line.

With speakers CMSS 3D shifts the stereo focus to the center channel (I can't say this is a good thing, or sounds great). With headphones I can only speculate its effects, possible the equivalent of a crossfeed filter (delaying sounds out of phase to give the illusion of greater distance).

Whether it sounds good or not is up to you to try, but in theory most of this stuff just smells funny. (Kind of like, buy Bose if you like the sound, but in terms of objective design it's still a fishy product that took a lot of shortcuts).

Not sure about that game - never really play around settings too much other than enable trade name features if found in menu, etc.
