x-fi and the "cd in" slot missing

Hi all,

My old audigy card had a "cd in" slot where I usually connect a wire that lead from the cd/dvd drive. On the x-fi, there is no such thing in sight.

Do I still need to connect "a drive" to the sound card.

advise.

Thx

thats for an analoug CD playing via your cd rom its not required w/ NT based oses anymore as the Cds audio is now sent over the IDE / PCI bus and doesn't require a dedicated connection to the sound card like it did in the old days.

haha. Is that something legacy??? I guess I can take the cable out altogether.

It's funny because that cable has not been required for quite a while, and yet every dell computer still comes with one. In a world where saving a few pennies on each machine could make the company a lot of money, I would have thought they would have removed that cable a long time ago. I'm sure they are not the only company that does that too.

Yeah. It's strange how many people think that the CD audio cable is still required (strangely enough, including the Cisco A+ exams). Does Linux still require it or something?

I don't think Linux does, either. I've played CDs in Ubuntu fine and I don't use that cable.

Even though that cable got annoying because it was never long enough to route any other way than straight over to the drive (ugly with a side window) I still actually liked it. When playing an audio CD in windows now it speeds the drive up for the digital instead of 1X (quiet!) for the analog out. Oh well, I don't play audio CD's in my computer much anyway but when I'm home my brother's computer is on the other wall from my computer and he listens to CDs in it - and that drive buzzes so loudly it gets on my nerves 😛

Do they still have SPDIF out connections on cd/dvd roms anymore? I havent noticed if they do or not.

Alas, I reckon direct digital output is rare these days since the el-cheapo PCI bus method became standard with the intro of ye olde DVD. Perhaps the X-FI's SPDIF_IO header could be utilized to avoid loading the PCI bus. To solve an over-revving drive during CD playback, check for a firmware update, manufacturer utility or grab the universal freebee Nero DriveSpeed.
