X-Fi and its alleged preamp

I bought a condenser microphone, AKG C2000B, and I also bought a cable that has an XLR connector for the mic and a 1/4" jack for output.

I hooked this into the Line 3/Hi-Z jack that says it does not need preamplification from an outside source, and I can't get it to make any sound. I tap it and nothing comes out. I tried to record and it's not working...

The website says it has a built in pre-amp for direct recording... but I guess it's not working.

Do you have the mic unmuted in the control panel?

No, it doesn't matter it doesn't use the Microphone input. The line in is unmuted, I can hook up my guitar and it sounds fine. Thanks though.

You still need a preamp with a single ended output. Most mic's with an XLR are low impedance devices with a balanced output signal on terminals 2 and 3. Regardless of any adapter, they will not mate up correctly with an input designed for a two terminal, high impedance signal source.

XLR is a balanced connection. There are 2 conductors carrying the same signal, but 180 degrees out of phase. The third conductor is ground. Your mic input is 1/4 inch mono (1 signal conductor, 1 ground). Where does the other conductor go? Is this adapter powered?

No, I bought it from Musician's Friend website.

That's probably it, then. I need a preamp with XLR input and normal output... hopefully I can find a cheap solution.
