X-COM collection, 5 games, $5 for all 5 at Steam this weekend

Are these guaranteed to work in XP/Vista? UFO Defense and Terror From the Deep were DOS titles, IIRC.

I remember the sheer terror the first time I played UFO Defense and one of the superfast aliens came after my squad. 🙂

If you click on the individual titles, they all say "Supported OS: Microsoft® 2000/XP/Vista"

I bought UFO Defense and Terror from the Deep on Steam and have played them on XP. Works perfectly fine.

TotD was tough

It's just really long 'cause the monsters play peepkaboo with you for hours, and when you find it, it one shots you and you lose track of where he's hiding and have to spend another hour searching for it again. But damn that game's awesome. TRex, lobster man, tentacle monsters that MC you. They don't make games this awesome anymore.

For combat, it's quite similar. But X-Com is much deeper in the non-combat aspect of the game. There are a lot more micro management you have to deal with, things like building base, research, manufacturing, recruitment, etc. Get it now! X-Com Apocalypse is especially awesome 'cause it's in "3D" and you can engage in aircraft combat in the city, shooting UFOs, rival aircraft, and buildings. LOL, you can level the whole city if you want.

I never completed X-COM and I lost the floppies. Now here's my chance to relive it. Thanks, OP.

FYI, it runs under Vista 64-bit no problem.

Squaddies are generic, without the banter of Fox, Wolf, etc.

Tactical combat is very similar, JA2 is a little deeper but X-Com has destructible buildings (at night I use incendiary rounds to burn buildings instead of using flares), tanks, sci-fi powersuits (that evenutally fly).

Liked Baked says the resource management is deeper, you build bases with labs to research tech, holding pens if you capture aliens, manufacturing to make weapons and armor, and fighters to intercept UFOs. You need to fund everything so you can't overbuild or overhire.

Thanks OP. Been waiting forever on a compelling deal for the whole series. This fit the ticket. Ordered and was playing X-Com UFO Defense within 30 secs of purchase on XP32. Thanks again for the heads up.

according to the wiki entry, the first two titles were rereleased late last year with vista support.

I'm playing it now for the first time and I turn into ground beef in the first 5 seconds of encountering an alien. I need to call my brother for some tips 🙁

Abandonware is just another name for old warez. It's not legal, only partially tolerated by publishers. _Something currently being sold is not abandonware._ X-COM has no right to be on that site...

are they still selling the dos or amiga versions?

they are selling something a different version. now, if he had the xp/vista version then it would be different.

but if you feel so strongly about it, maybe you should send him an email and tell him to remove all of them from his site then

X-COM!!!! One of my most favorite games ever! One of the best PC games of all times. I first played it off floppies on a 386. Found the CD version in bargain bins and played it on a 486. Found the sequel TFTD and played it on my pentium 100Mhz. I have all the strategy guides, the novel, and the original Larry Mann and Russ Brown fanfic on my X-COM shelf. I have a pin and a mug from the press release kit. I loved developing strategy for the game and was the basis of my tactics and squad deployment training.

I was disappointed by Apocolypse and Interceptor and had high hopes for Alliance and Genesis. To this day! my brother and I still talk about how cool X-COM would be for the DS or the 360 w/revamped and updated graphics. I think we even worked on a movie script. The Battlescape is perfect for the DS and I could see the Geoscape from Endwars being used. We use X-COM as the standard of comparison for every game w/Geoscape or Battlescape. I would love to see a first person shooter in the storyline and could easily see it on the 360 or PS3. I can almost picture an MMO version with Bases around the world and squaddies from all over joining in on a mission and ranking up...

The X-COM collection had UFO and TFTD updated for XP and PC Gamer gave it away on their CD couple years ago. We've been reliving the old days in XP with it.
If I had steam, I would buy several copies of this. And since I don't have steam, I am seriously considering signing up just for X-COM. But I would *pay* for an X-COM remake or sequel.

Ahhhhh, I knew I should have checked the deals on steam this weekend. Ida payed this $5 GLADLY. I own the collection of all the games put out in the late 90's, but they are not compatible with newer computers. Had to go through a lot of compatibility things in XP just to get them to run.

I agree that an x-com sequel would be a wonderfull thing. Though I'd prefer it to be in line with the original.
