X-Box modding.

Hi.
To start off. I dont own an XBox. I dont want an XBox, nor am i a XBox fan.

Now. Ive recently read some of the mods that can be done to an XBox, and im quite intreagued by them.

Ive heard that;
*The HD can be replaced with a bigger & faster drive,
*The DVD drive can be replaced with a faster one,
*You can buy memory modules, and using some crafy soldering techniques, add more memory to the xbox.
*You can remove the 733mhz p3/celeron hybrid, and replace it with a 1.4ghz celeron.

Now obviously all that`d void the warrenty, but think about it this way;
There are quite a few games on the XBox that either take a while to load or have frame rate problems. Now by doing the above mods, all of these "problems" could be gone.
The new processor/extra memory would likely remove the frame rate problems, and the bigger/faster HD and DVD drive would remove the loading problems.
Just a thought.
I just found it interesting.

Replacing the DVD Drive is kind of a pain from what I heard. You can't just replace it with any drive, that'll lead to problems with legit disk reading I believe

I HAVE heard of adding more RAM, however I wonder if the programs would even see it (it's mostly done for people doing MAME emulation with games bigger than 64mb)

You CAN add a bigger drive with a mod chip.

I've never heard about replacing the processor, I'd be kind of afraid to do that, I don't think it's a socket design like a PC, so you'd have to unsolder it.

Never heard of replacing the CPU. Guess it's possible, but I've read for hours on xbox-scene and never seen anyone mention that.

You might not be aware that the reason people are throwing in larger harddrives is for storing games. You can actually just load them on the harddrive. With a proper mod, you can use your XBOX and never use another DVD or CD again. That is unless you want to play online.

I do remember seeing a site one time that was selling pre-modded xboxes with a bigger hard drive and the 1.4 ghz celeron, but I don't remember the site. I'm not looking to buy an xbox so I didn't really pay much attention to it. Just thought it was kind of interesting and then moved on.

Replacing the dvd-rom is actually really easy (and it makes loading times quickers as well). You actually can use just about any dvd drive.

You can replace them. In fact theres places that`ll sell pre-modded XBoxs with new CPUs in them.

From what i read, the memory is recognised by the XBox itself, regardless of the game being used. And whatever games been used, will be able to use that memory.

You talk like you're an expert on XBox modding, yet in your first post you say you've HEARD of things you can do to it? :confused:

The idea of running Xbox games (not Live! games obviously) off of a 7200 RPM HD makes the Xbox more attractive to me (presumably much faster load times). The problem is after you've paid for the various mods, the price point of the Xbox isn't quite as attractive anymore.

I personally wouldn't bother with anything other than HD and a mod chip. If I want to mess around with CPU/RAM performance I'll upgrade my gaming PC.

On similar lines, I've heard of buying that HD/LAN port for PS2 allows you to install Linux, which in turn allows you to install DivX software.

Is it true I can have a DivX player for another 50 or so dollers? Can I upgrade the HD for my PS2 if I get one? That would rock.

At least he's honest about it (based on his handle) ;)

Im a bit confused here. Are you insulting me or RagingBITCH?
If your insulting me, then i suggest you grow up. I was merely stating what ive read and seen, and expressing my interest in it.

The PS2 doesn't have a hard drive in it.

Everyone! There seems to be a big flame above.

It was a simple question. Apparently certain asswipes (ie, not you) took it out of context because they like to flame me any chance they get.

I don't doubt that you seem to be knowledgeable about the subject, but the fact remains, theory != actual experience. You can read up on something only so much. Your first post states that you heard of things you can do, then you go around in the thread debunking people with actual experience.

BTW, if you or anyone else thinks ^ is a flame you're far too sensitive. It's just the internet, don't take everything so seriously

The Linux set (HD, Keyboard, mouse) went on sale probably a year or so ago. It was about $300 IIRC. However, outside of that, the HD for the PS2 isn't available in the US. It has also been stated that the HD with the Linux package is not compatable with games and wouldn't be the same setup as the HD released for gaming.

Another thing, Sony was the only person selling the Linux kits. You had to order directly from them.

Oh yeah I know about that. But he was saying you can "upgrade" the hard drive. There is no hard drive currently in the system to upgrade :)
