X-Box cable connection question

Okay, okay, I know I can just ask my salesperson tomorrow, but something tells me the stores will be a real mess, so . . .

I am buying an X-Box. I have a Kenwood VR-4090 receiver, with support for Dolby Surround, which is connected to my TV by an S-Video cable. All audio and video inputs go through the receiver. It has multiple S-Video and optical and coaxial digital audio inputs.

I gather that, in order to get Dolby Surround working with my system, I will want to buy the Advanced A/V Pack, and an S-Video and optical or coax audio cable. Is this right? Is this all I need?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

If you have S-vid on your tv and not Component video, then the next best thing is to get the Advanced AV Pack.
You buy that and an optical audio cable and you are all set for decent video along with quality sound.

None of the packs use digital coax for audio and the Advanced AV comes with the cable for S-vid, so you just need the optical cable (it does also come with RCA cables so you could use RCA for A/V until you get an optical cable).

Thanks, guys! This is a simple question, but it is surprisingly hard to find a specific answer online.

Also, can you safely stand the X-Box up vertically (a la PS2), or does it need to be horizontal?

Thanks again, and happy Thanksgiving!

I personally wouldn't turn it upside down cause it's fricken heavy, and the dvd tray doesn't have clips on it so that your disc might get jammed or fall out. I don't know anyone else who stood theirs up on end.

Hehe If you buy it and then take it out of the box, just put it on its side without turning it on. You will see why I don't think you will use it like this.

the xbox isn't suppose to be used on its side vertically.

Do not turn the XBox on it's side - there's air intake/exhaust fans on each side. Plus I'm not sure it's good for the DVD player to turn it upside down

BTW - Target has Rallisport Challenge for like $13. Hope you didn't pay too much for it. Halo, MechAssault, and Splinter Cell all kick mucho @$$ - those are must-haves
