X-58 ud5a win 8.1 and raid

So I just upgraded OS from XP to 8.1. I am trying to install raid1 on 2 300gb velociraptors.
The bios recognizes the raid as 2 disks at 279 gb each. Installed the intel win64 drivers for intel ich 10r and then installed os. The performance is not what I expected, and the OS sees the disk as one 558 gb disk instead of 279 gb disk. This makes me think the OS is not recognizing the raid. This my first attempt installing a raid configuration. Any thoughts here?

279 and 279=558GB as 1 drive. Usually the old raid, you had to install the drivers durring windows install(do that in ICH wateva mode). When the install is complete you turn the Raid on(In SATA settings)so you would go from ICH mode to Raid mode, then boot from the raid. Sounds like your is working have you run any tests on it to see the read n write speeds?

Looks like you configured it as JBOD or RAID0.

Did you go into your motherboard's RAID configuration utility (usually the prompt directly after the board BIOS prompt and before loading the OS)?

If you did, tell us how it is reporting the array's configuration.
