Oh well... I guess this forces me to wait until I see something else I really like. I would prefer something sub-$1100, so I guess this is a good thing. I was pissed last night though.

wait, then the price will be even lower and you can pay off your debt while you wait

This laptop is like $2000 any place else. I don't know how long the deal will last.

There will always be deals coming out.

So, do you want a work/school machine, or a gaming laptop?

Both!

Oh well. If you wanted a work machine there are plenty in that price range.

I just bought a Latitude D620 with a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB Ram, WXGA+, DVDRW, Nvidia Quadro 110m, Fingerprint reader, and more for $1,240. Comparible thinkpads can be had for $200 more. That includes a 3 year onsite warranty.

Asus does have some good quality notebooks, but if you didn't need gaming I wouldn't hesitate to take a latitude and thinkpad over one, especially with a 2 year longer warranty.

I bought one and sold it within a week. The screen on a D620 really really sucks bad. Yes, i know it is a matte screen but I compared it directly to my D600 screen (also matte) and the D620's screen was really dull and was causing a eye strain.

Check out the big thread about D620 screen on Dell Forums.

Odd. I have a D620 widescreen that work just game me, brand spanking new! I'm very happy with it and the screen isn't dull at all? It looks just fine.

I'd rather have a gloss type finish, but the matte isn't bad for free.

Geez.. I don't mean to do a huge topic U-turn here, but I see this place is fond on charging for a 0-dead pixel policy. I like the idea if you're not going to return below a certain number, but 205 dollars?!?!? Ugh, sometimes these places piss me off, and yeah I know there are ways around it but that's not the point. Something like that shouldn't cost anything really, but what do I know? (If you can't tell, I've had problems with pixels in the past *and present with a DS 🙁*)

The screen seems to be a hit or miss. I've gotten to used to mine very easily, and I like that it's a matte screen as it doesn't reflect anything. I'm coming from a 700m, which had a phenominal screen, so I was expecting a downgrade, but it looks just like any matte laptop screen I've seen.

That's what I was afraid of 🙁

That one word can make a lot of difference in opinion 😛. I compared the D620 screen with my D600 screen (both are matte) and there was a difference (a lot).

When I used the D620 alone (nothing to compare it with), then it seemed fine after a little while but whenever I used to compare the two (D600 and D620) together, I would get eye strains whenever I looked at the D620.

Your opinion will also change on the D620 when you compare it to another laptop with a matte screen. There is a big thread even on the Dell forums regarding the D620 screen and even one of the techs acknowleded that a different/better screen is going to be used for the next D6xx series.

Had a Thinkpad before I got this D620. I prefer the Thinkpad. (don't get me wrong, the D620 is not a bad machine)

yes, I had the 700m for a year or so. Currently typing this reply on a m1210 (700m/710m base and same screen).

Trading the m1210 for the Asus A8JS laptop next week (deal already done). I want that WXGA+ resolution and better video card 😀

how's the thinkpad? mine shipped last night!!!!

Good and bad.

Bad - I never realized how much of a widescreen whore I am until now. My biggest gripe is it isn't a WSXGA display but I knew this when I ordered. Keyboard feels a little mushy but it probably takes some getting used to.

Good - Total absolute bad ass laptop in BLACK BLACK BLACK, thin for it's size, definitely not cheap plasticky. Good build quality. If you chose the ThinkPad WiFi it's super strong and sensitive, I picked up WiFi hotspots which I never knew existed. The ThinkVantage software is cool, a lot of people complain it's bloated though. 9 cell lasts around 7 hours with screen dimmed and WiFi off. After I ordered it, I had second thoughts about getting the fingerprint reader but I'm glad I did. It's so convenient to just swipe my finger to login instead of having to type in a password.

If it wasn't for the LCD and keyboard I'd seriously consider keeping but I'll probably sell it. That leaves me with a difficult choice continue using my old but beloved Dell 700m or open the Dell E1405 sitting in my kitchen? If I don't I'll probably sell that as well.

Maybe I should look at the Dell XPS M1210.

If you really like the 700m/710m, then you will LOVE the m1210. Trust me on this since I am currently using the m1210.

However, I am trading my m1210 for the Asus A8JS (I want that higher resolution and better video card - dont care much about battery life that much since my laptop is mostly plugged into A/C most of the time)....but I am also having 2nd thoughts....should I do the trade or not.....

Well like I said before, make sure you get one with vista on it, or at least a free upgrade coupon. With Vista only a month away it'd be silly to only get an XP license.

I'd be all over this Asus if it offered integrated graphics (battery life) and 3 year warranty at a good price, which it might.

What are the specs on your M1210 and what's the RossMAN special pricing? 😉

the specs on my m1210 are as follows:
Core 2 Duo T7200
2GB Ram (2x 1GB)
Nvidia 7400Go
60gb 7200rpm hard drive
dvd burner
9-cell battery
AV setup - webcam, SIM card reader
Bluetooth
Dell Draft-N wifi

basically fully loaded m1210 😀 The 9-cell battery gives ~5hrs.

The A8JS has:
1GB ram (vs 2GB on my m1210)
Better video card - 7700 (vs 7400 on my m1210)
Better screen - 14" and higher resolution
no Bluetooth

Right now, the guy wants to do an even trade...my m1210 for his A8JS but I am thinking of keeping the 1GB ram so that I can have 2GB in my Asus.

Did you buy your M1210 brand new or outlet or used (ebay)?

Price you paid?

Compared to your 700m, can you give me a brief review of what you like, don't like and how they're similiar?

I did a quick google search on the model number listed on Newegg's page, and $1299 seems to be the current price for it almost everywhere...

M1210 vs 700m comparision:

Same:
Size - 12" form factor
Glossy screen
same sized keyboard

Better:
Dedicated graphics option
Webcam & SIM Card holder
Media control buttons on front
dual output for headphones
much better build quality
PCI-E wifi card and DDR2 Ram
Bluetooth option

Cons:
Front buttons have blue LEDs - bad if you sleep with laptop in bed sometimes - LED glare in eye
Expensive
Little thicker than 700m (I think but dont remember exactly)
no USB ports at back (dont know if 700m had them at back or not)
Dell tech supports seems to be going downhill.

M1210 vs 700m comparision:

Thank you 🙂

Same:

All good although a slightly larger keyboard would be nice. However it's unrealistic in this form factor.

Better:
Dedicated graphics option
Webcam & SIM Card holder
Media control buttons on front
dual output for headphones
much better build quality
PCI-E wifi card and DDR2 Ram
Bluetooth option

Although I would really like BT on my 700m I'm not sure if I would actually use it.

Cons:

Expensive
Little thicker than 700m (I think but dont remember exactly)
no USB ports at back (dont know if 700m had them at back or not)

Other than the "expensive" the others I can live with. The 700m only has two USB slots on the left hand side which sucks. Wireless mouse + USB headset and they're all occupied 🙁

Only 5 hours with the 9 cell? That's with full brightness and wifi on right?
