WWYD: Temporary Living Arrangements

I took a job away from home for the next 3 months and I need a temporary place to live. It looks like I have 2 options.

#1: Nice Extended Stay Hotel - $44/day, 3month commitment
PROS:
Free internet
Free gym membership (to a real gym)
New
Private space
They clean

CONS:
More expensive than option #2

#2: Rent a bedroom in a house - $700/month, no solid commitment required
PROS:
Cheaper than option #1

CONS:
Farther away from everything (work, gym, stores, etc)
Just me and a 55 year old single woman living there
She has a cat (I am a little allergic, my wife is pretty allergic)
Not a ton of privacy

The deal is, I am here, wife is at home, but she'll be here on weekends sometimes. But most of the time I'd be home on weekends.

Both places have a kitchen and laundry (coin operated at extended stay, but I dry clean my work shirts anyway).

Being away from home means more pay, so in either arrangement I am making considerably more than before. But the less I can spend the more I can bank.

So what would you do?

hotel
edit. depends on how much you're making at that job for 3 months.
Hotel will run you ~$4K, rent will be ~2K. If you're making something like 5K, then you know which is the only option

better yet, why not take option 2 and get a hotel room for a night when your wife comes to visit?

$44*30= $1320 Hotel

So you would save $620 per month by staying with the old lady. ($1860 over 3 months)

I would think you could get a temporary 3 month gym membership and stay at a really nice hotel the weekends when the wife comes to visit for $1860.

Have you looked into corporate rentals?

Yes, they were 90+/night. Which is crazy.

The 44/night is a good deal for what it is I think. The money is somewhat of an object, but even after I pay for the hotel and my current bills I have a what used to be my whole paycheck left over (so I basically doubled my income).

When I was apartment hunting, I saw 3 month rentals for pre-furnished apartments. Very nice apartments for about $1200 a month.

If you have any significant debt (CC bills, owe taxes, etc) I would go for #2... won't be as comfortable or convenient, but it's almost a $2k difference which is a pretty big chunk of change. Since you said you would get all your bills paid off I'm assuming it isn't as much of an issue, but I would still strongly consider it. Think of what you could do with $2k - help pay off your car, get a nice HT setup, put it in your retirement account or your kid's college fund. You could also take a sweet vacation, think of it as a reward to you and your wife at the end of these 3 months, that way you'll both have something to look forward to.

Since you mentioned there is no firm commitment for #2, you might go there and see how it is for the first month. If it's really not working due to the privacy issues, or your wife can't stand the cat or something, you can always move to the hotel. In the meantime you can also be checking out CL and looking around town for better alternatives.

edit: just reread it and saw the hotel is a 3 month commitment so that may not work, do they have a different rate for 2 months as a backup?
