Why does a sexual preference mean you get the same status as a black person, agnostic person, Mexican-born U.S. citizen, male/female, old person or disabled person? Sexual preference shouldn't warrant someone be given protections that true minorities receive based on designations laid down that are meant to ensure no one is put at a social or economic disadvantage.

Why? Because people use it against them to hold them down, that's why. Because this is fucking America, where everyone's supposed to get a fair shake, because we're all created equally. Last I checked, we didn't have people passing laws specifically to keep anybody else from getting married.

Living in American doesn't guarantee you a fair shake and obviously we're all not created equally as per many of the posts here. If we were, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

You can't tell from a job application if someone is gay. You can't tell from an interview if someone is gay...you can have questions or have an inclination but you can't tell unless the information is divulged. You can't tell when you seat someone at a restaurant if someone is gay...again unless the information is divulged. With regards to race, creed, color, sex, national origin, et al...these are all things that can be surmised from a job application, etc. Therefore, an employer or business-owner can discriminate at leisure without the minorities having adequate protections. Again, how you take and how you give it in the bedroom shouldn't give you status protection.

So, you're saying that it's okay for an employer to discriminate against someone for being gay?

People do discriminate against gay people and there are ways of telling if someone is gay. Maybe not just by looking at them but over time most people will suspect and that can affect things like job promotions and/or layoffs. Some people are openly gay but many are not for fear of ridicule.

I worked with a guy who was openly gay and had a picture of his BF on his desk. I was a little put off by this at first but he is a really nice guy and over time I genuinely grew to like him (he no longer works here-moved on to bigger and better things). My workplace accepted him completely too, which is how it should be. Not all places are like that and you're kidding yourself if you think they are.

I'll just go ahead and quote myself from earlier in the thread:

IMO, people who literally throw away their children because of this are the lowest form of scum and didn't deserve them in the first place.

No worries really, with a parent like him, I doubt the kid would want to be in that house ever, let alone after the age of 18!

If girl suitably hot guy and ask similar question.

Trust me, they are certain they are gay. I can understand being a little disappointed as a parent that your preconceived ideas of what you wanted your child to become did not pan out. A good parent will get over it quick and support their child.

I guess some of us just care more about things like the ideals the country was founded upon than others.
Living in America does not automatically guarantee you a fair shake...there are always forces working against that whether they be because of your race, creed, or color or whether they're based on your economic status. There is no guarantee of a fair shake. There is only the guarantee that there is a fair shake available if you work the environment to your advantage.

That's not the question to be asking...the correct question is to what subset of homosexuals does most discrimination occur? I work with quite a few homosexuals and have a good working relationship with the ones who you couldn't tell were homosexual unless told so. I also work with a few, on the other hand, who are completely flaming and act like your quintessential 'queer'. I would be willing to bet that most discrimination happens to those homosexuals who go out of their way to promote their lifestyle. When you try to impose your lifestyle choices on someone who doesn't want to hear it, you get nothing but retribution and exile in return.

Again, I go back to my original assertion that a person should not get special protections socially with regards to how they give it and how they take it in the bedroom. It's assinine.

Sure but it have to be for the GOP/republicans and of course they have to hate gays while hitting on pages and meeting others in bathroom stalls while voting to make sure gays have less rights and protections then "normals".

Better.

Not all Republicans hate gays. In fact there are many gay Republicans. Ever heard of Log Cabin Republicans?

I also have run into many Democrats that hate gay people.

Why doesn't it automatically guarantee you a fair share? Because it's just the way the world works and the way the cookie crumbles. Unfortunately, we are not perfect. There are murderers, rapists, and many other bad people. I'm not trying to compare gays to any of that but if you're trying to see the USA as a perfect place where everyone gets a fair share of the pie and equal rights, that just isn't going to happen. Can you hope and pray and live to those standards or ideals? Sure but you can't expect everyone else to do the same. And it's just the way the world works.

Fixed for ya.

Unless YOU had to choose to be heterosexual? Or maybe you forced yourself to be hetero and try to control your desire for men?

Most are born gay. There are cases of people choosing to be gay or bisexual to buck societal norms. This is really popular in the Punk Rock scene.

I'm gay.

if I adopted a baby and later found out that s/he was gay? I'd just want them to be happy... but there's no way in hell I'm ever stepping foot inside a PFLAG meeting unless my cold, dead corpse was dragged inside ;)

Criticize him about his standards.

I kid! I kid! :p

There is nothing wrong with wanting your son to have the best, or at least someone in the top 75%.
