This site here www.weather.com aka the Weather Channel just did a redesign. For the most part it's an improvement. They merged the current stuff with the 'dar. However, and I get a big chuckle out of this, they now offer a 10-day forecast!

Hey Weather people GET A CLUE! If you can't get tomorrow's forecast right more than 50% of the time who the hell do you think you're fooling with this 10-day crap????

The 10 day thing is more so you get the general idea, not to be exact.

Actually, weather people get tomorrow's forecast right > 80% of the time. Granted, any prediction more that 48-72hrs gets a little shaky, its better than nothing. Like said above, medium range forecasts are good at getting the general idea right, but bad at the specifics.

Oh ya, plus, the weather channel, IMO, isn't that good. The NWS puts out much better forecasts.

That's just the point: I would not even try prognosticating beyond my abilities. Of course, accuracy often depends on your location (e.g. it's easier to predict Cali weather than say the northeast).

Seems to me Weather is trying to justify new machine, software and manpower expenses by moving "up" to a 10-day forecast. But anything beyond tomorrow for many of us has always been meaningless.

"Accurate and dependable?" Today's forecast maybe. Anything beyond that is a lie.

England has the most accurate weather prediction in the world. Now only have they been doing it the longest of all countries (so they have a huge ammount of data to compare and estimate with), they also have something like the 3rd or 4th fastest computer in the world JUST on weather forecasting.

EVEN THEN they only bother to do forecasts for up to 7 days in advance.

edit: Ohh yeah, and since its a small country, they get all that computing power on a small surface area, so they get even more accurate results.

My forecast (4 day) is almost always accurate. It's from Environment Canada btw...the guys on the news are always wrong and saying the opposite of Environment Canada...idiots.

-Weather.com doesn't have to buy new computers for 10-day forecasts. They just use the MRF (medium range forecast) model provided by National Center for Environmental Prediction, which is a 10-day model.
-Medium range forecasting may not so good now, but the models are constantly upgraded. Its important to have an operational model to further improve future models.

-The model run by the UK forecasts for the entire globe or Northern Hemisphere if I'm not mistaken. I know it has output for the states. I don't know if the Brits have the most accurate weather prediction in the world.

-I just don't like it when people bash meteorolgists. The guys on TV may suck, but that shouldn't bring down the rest of us scientists.

-Finally, I leave with the Recipe for Disaster, or, The Forecaster's Excuse

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere 8000 miles in diameter,
Surround it with a viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor,
Tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light,
Freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle,
Cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun:

Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!! :D

Personally I liked the old weather.com a bit better. It looked cleaner and less bloated. I do like the 10 day forecast, but they had that on the old site.

As for their predictions, they're as acurate as any weather site out there can be. Predicting weather is hard work.

I can do that myself.

Tomorrow. Dank and cloudy.
Wed. Dank and cloudy.
Thu. Dank and cloudy.
Fri. Dank and cloudy.
Sat. Dank and cloudy.
Sun. Dank and cloudy.

Locutus of Board,

You forgot about the stereotypical rain. ;)

jahawkin,

No one here is bashing meteorologists, only the decision to deliver 10-day "forecasts". BTW, I believe Weather just spent $$$ for improved equipment and/or modeling software to more accurately predict hurricane developments and tracks.

There's no doubt forecasting saves lives and is a great aid to everyone...I'm just openly questioning some Weather egos out there. Basically I look at today's forecast and glance at tomorrows and ignore the rest because they're seldom correct.

Azraele,

The WC is very good but they're often behind in providing current weather conditions in many local areas (on the web site at least).
