Ah, yes, well I have a problem getting upset over numbers provided with no references and no context. I imagine I could find much larger numbers for some other arbitrary group like black people or liberals or some such. The question is why I CARE what those numbers are. The obvious implication is that they are somehow "stealing" this money, but I'm not sure I see the connection.

Don't leave out the spaghetti eaters, while you're at it, and the croissant eaters too.

I think much of the anti-immigrant hysteria this time around comes from the fact that previous immigrant waves tended to land and assimilate in the big cities on the coasts which were always more multi-cultural and worldly such as NYC and Philadelphia. When immigrants directly moved to the rural center of the country such as Scandinavians to Minnesota or Germans throughout much of the country they formed small towns which they dominated except for native Americans whose jobs actually assisted the immigrants assimilate such as people who saw a new business opportunity and opened up stores or prairie teachers who came to run the one room schoolhouse.

With present day increased mobility, communications, and diversity of employment opportunities, immigrants are fanning out into rural areas of America which are not used to seeing different people and this may cause some of the culture shock.

Lookout! The [Germans/Irish/Italians/Chinamen/Japanese/Mexicans/Muslims]

Are going to [commit crimes/change our culture/breed Americans into a minority/refuse to assimilate/steal our jobs]

And then sell us out to their [foreign power of origin/oriental culture/Islam]!

The only way to stop this is to [limit their immigration/deport them/intern them in camps/call up the minutemen]!

If we don't do this we will all be [doomed/doomed/doomed/doomed/doomed]!!!

Here, try it yourself! It's sort of like Mad Libs.

Why isn't there a statistic for the amount of money U.S. businesses are raking in by using cheaper labor?

Edit: It looks like illegal immigrants cost the country around $10 billion a year according to the Center for Immigration Studies (an anti-immigration thinktank).
Cited here... http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB...IYc_20060725.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top

Compare that with the nearly $100 billion a year price for the war in Iraq.

At least you get cheap veggies from the illegal immigrants.

You are supposed to react so.
"OH MY GOD! One day soon the U.S.of A will populated by the descendants
of immigrants! Damn them Irish, Italians, Germans, Greeks, Polish, Cossacks,
Jews and Catholics, Etc."

Dated to the 1920's, just change the labels to fit. Old numbers, but still true. Illegal immigrants contribute 60+ billion to the economy and consume about three billion.

What you fail to consider is that we don't have the resources we had 100 years ago. Hell, my grandfather even homesteaded some unclaimed land here in 1910, 30 years after his grandfather homsteaded 1/2 mile away.

I'd like to see a link to your numbers. If we have 15 million illegals in this country and they are only consuming 3 billion that comes to $200/person. Something doesn't add up?

I don't believe that we have ever had the volume of illegal immigration that we do today. Also, the immigrants in the 1920's assimilated into the US, learning the language, customs, etc.. The ILLEGAL immigrants of today make no effort to become Americans, they want to bring their third world here, keep their language, etc.. Of course this does not apply to all of them, but from what I have seen here in Maryland, it applies to most.

1. WTH is wrong with burritos?

2. EVERYBODY takes naps.

I`m sorry you have issues with hispanics in general!!
When I was an employer the hispanics worked exponentially harder than everyone else!!
Sure there are the few bad apples but for the most part they are hard working and they pay there bills--including there medical bills from the county hospital!!

For the most part its the dead beat white people who were born in the USA who believe they shoiuld get a free ride because they are after all Americans!!

Eh, I don't know about the rest of you, but I think our society could always use a little improvement. And new immigrant groups have always helped with that, despite the naysayers at the time.

If that was the case then our immigration laws should be restored to 1964, so instead of 1.5 million a year, we would only get some 200,000. THEN they can melt in and improve, instead of replace our country with third world culture and poverty.

You guys talk a great deal about the consequences of our continued border policy, but how do you propose we completely seal 2 borders of length 1951 miles (Mexico) and 5522 miles (Canada)? You think building a 1951 mile long wall / fence will do ANYTHING to hamper illegals?

Haven't we spent like $500 billion on Iraq already?

It would be nice to get that $500 + $400 billion back.. but who gets it back?!

"skilled jobs taken by illegal immigrants".. last time i checked "skilled" job required a social security # for W2 purposes. What skilled jobs are they talking about? Mowing lawns?

See, there is where I have my problem with this train of thought. Virtually everyone in this country receives government money in some form or another, especially when it comes to education. The reason for this is that we contribute to the economy and it makes sense for the government to assist us. Now while illegal aliens obviously didn't get the legal OK for thisctl, they also work and also contribute to the economy and (directly or indirey) pay taxes. The website presents it like the illegal aliens are robbing a bank and keeping the money under their collective mattress, and I'm saying I don't think it's quite that simple.

Totally agree with this. For a long time, I thought no illegal immigrant (or at least every few of them) paid taxes, and it pisses me off to think that they are benefiting from my taxes without paying anything back. But recently I read that actually quite a big portion of them DO pay taxes, and the number is increasing (although, i'm not sure if the ratio of tax paying immigrants to total immigrants is increasing..). As long as they make their contributions, I don't see the problem with them being here.

If they assimilated then why are theere still china towns, and polish neighborhoods, and Italian neighborhoods, and Irish neighborhood in cities all over the US? Assimilation never happened.
