if you go to www.google.com

then add a period . after .com so. . .

www.google.com.

it displays the page differently. Why is this? I recall awhile back if you add the dot, it displays the page as saying 'English' under the google graphic.

"looks the same to me... "
Look closer. The second one has a line of text in larger font and has a link to the normal google.

Your browser must have cached Google.com and doesn't refresh it when you go to that site. However, it thinks the Google.com. is a different site and gets it from the Web rather than cache.

*** Do a Scandisk, check your system date, and set the browser to automatically renew pages, not to load them from cache.

Looks like any page might do this.
Anandtech.com
Anandtech.com.
Anandtech comes up slightly dif as well.

Although the googles are different, AT shows up the exact same.
Hmm... now they are showing up the same... the first several times I loaded it the fonts were different. Specifically the search box up top.
Strange.

That's weird, the period at the end takes me to 'Google, English'
It makes no sense from a DNS point of view, I wonder how it works.

Weird... I see the ad above 'news' changing sizes between the two... w/ anandtech.com. showing a smaller ad...

Google DOT gives me english, Google.ca gives me Google Canada, and if I type Google.com it'll redirect to Google.ca.

Actually, the . at the end of any domain stands for the Internet as a whole. In one of my classes we learned that. You have subdomain.domain.topleveldomain.internet but the internet is understood so you don't even type it. If my assumptions are correct, you should be able to put a period after any top level domain (.com, .net. org) and the address will still work. Try it with the URL in the top of your browser right now.

"." is the root zone of the internet domain system. you can put it after any domain name, but since it's always needed, you don't have to type it, it's just assumed. it's just playing mind games with google's virtual hosts.
