It's just a small 136kb freeware program called IEWallpaper that allows you to put any bitmap on your browser bar. I think I got that at Tucows.

I knew this was going to happen sooner or later... my next prediction is that Anandtech will be facing legal action very very soon (not in connection with the hack).
 
the box is prolly 0wn3d, so they may have to get physical access to it, by the way, if all those boxes are on the domain, and the hax0r got admin, he has all the boxes on the domain too 🙂

NT is really icky to clean up! when hacked.

Btw, the hacker was nice, and did not take out all the servers 🙂
 
It got CRACKED, not HACKED. Ever since that damn movie Hackers, everybody has been using the term to describe destructive electronic vandalism which is correctly known as cracking.

dunno about you dude, but when i was a kid i was "hacking" servers. circa 1979, i think thats a bit older than that movie you mentioned.

during those youthful years, i also "cracked" software, stuff like bop n wrestle and arctic fox.

i think you got the terms mixed up!
 
they are nt, i hope they are not telnet'ing, im sure it was probably an IIS or CFM related bugs, a lot of them ship default, and are easy to forget 🙂 of course see my sig, if you're running a server 🙂

the hackers have the upper hand, they find the holes, and then admins learn about them later, and may choose to fix them. Many times its months after a hole is found, that it is patched.

security is tedious, and expensive.
 
What a bunch of losers. A hacking rap. Bwahahahaha!!!! I bet they're real hard, dog. I never understood the cracking underground's fascination with hiphop slang. A bunch of skinny, pasty kids who think they're G's.

Hacking refers to just playing around...so maybe you were hacking servers but if you were doing so with the intent to harm, then you were cracking. If you were a nice "hacker" and cleaned up after yourself, patched the holes, then you are indeed a hacker. I didn't get the terms mixed up...trust me on this...I've had one too many hackers throw hissy fits when ever something is reported to be "hacked" by the media.

No real point in hacking, besides the thrill of compromising a huge sites security and having everyone see it.
Nothing was destroyed, and at least it didnt have the usual lame 1337 741k in it.

This is hilarious. I guess 99% of you guys read the enquirer too? 😉 This "hacker" simply exploited a hole in a new server (www4) that was shipped up to anandtech. It was noone's, and nothings fault. Many of the linux people will rant "ohhhhh you should have been using linux", yeah it is much more secure 😉 (NOT). Anyway, it was a simple manipulation of an iis script mapping. Anyway, maybe tomorrow we can read about how bush is really an alien 😉.
