WWI Flight sim with online play

Goto FilePlanet or Fileshack and look for Flight Sims. There have been some WW1 era games over the years, but I'm not sure if any had Online play or whether anyone plays them online.

NiceGuy,

A new (free) mod came out for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 3 (CFS3) that converts the WWII sim into a WWI sim. The original CFS3 was kind of a dud, but I've heard good things about this mod, Over Flanders Field (OFF).

The OFF homepage is here.
and a good forum discussing this new game is here.

I have CFS3, but haven't had the time to try OFF yet. I've heard pretty good things about it, and it may be worth a look. You're going to need to buy CFS3 for it, but it should be found for pretty cheap nowadays.

Oh, as for the online aspect. I believe OFF does support online play, but it may be finicky and I'm not quite sure how many people are online at any given time.

Right on! That looks good. I'll pick up a copy. I am hoping they are online as I like real players.

KNow any other good combat sims with a lot of online players?

flight sim games are pretty much dead. i know because i was looking for the same recently.

IL2 Sturmovik is probably your best bet and even then, there aren't many players online.

Warbirds had a WWI online arena, but it was the stepchild and very sparsely populated. Subscription flight-sim game, mainly WWII. Might be worth your looking at or doing a trial.

Nice guy,

The largest group of online fliers I know of right now (that isn't subscription based) is IL-2 Forgotten Battles (FB). But here's the kicker, to be fully compatible with everybody you need the expansion packs, Ace's Expansion Pack (AEP) and Pacific Fighters (PF). You can buy IL-2 Forgotten Battles "Gold" that includes (FB+AEP). PF can either be installed as a stand-alone game or be merged with FB+AEP for for a combat sim that covers all fronts (Eastern, Western, and Pacific). Also, if/when you get all this setup, you need to get a program called Hyperlobby that allows you to see what kind of games are going on.

There's a huge amount of guys flying this (FB+AEP+PF). I belong to a virtual squadron and we fly/train together regularly and then hold competitive matches with other squads. If you get into the online realm, I highly recommend getting into a squad as soon as possible as it really adds to the enjoyment.

A few links for you to check out...
Pacific Fighters (and other IL-2 sims): Pacific Fighters
Pretty good forums here too.

Also, SimHQ has good forums for this (and all other sims) as well. Go check the stickies at the top of the forums, and you'll see posts about the essentials for this game: what patches are necessary, hyperlobby, how to get online, etc.

Pontifex, were you looking at getting online with the original IL-2 or the newer Forgotten Battles? If FB, you also need the expansion packs (see above). Also, the in-game multiplayer is not really used. You need to look for and use a program called Hyperlobby, that's what everyone uses for connectivity.

Thanks so much for the info - very useful!

Is ping much of an issue? I imagine most players are in the states. I am currently in Japan.

Nice guy,

Ping isn't too bad, if the server is pretty decent. I'm in the States, but I've played with guys from England, France, Russia, and others I don't remember. I don't know if I've played against anyone in Japan.

Sometimes you'll see planes 'warping' around the sky when ping gets bad, but most servers are set to kick those that have too high of latency. Anyways, no matter where they're from I've been able to shoot them down and vice versa.

Dude, look through the stickied free software thread. It's been a while since I checked, but Dawn of Aces III is a free download and there is online play. The cool thing is that you can play solo without going online and add bots, you don't have to sign up for anything to do it either. Might be worth a look:

It is? From what I see you get 2 weeks Free then pay $14/month after that.

There was a BF1942 mod call Battlefield1918. It had quite a few WWI planes, but I wouldn't call it a true sim of course.

You can play the game for free without going online as much as you want and can add bots to fly against, or at least you could when I messed around with it a while back.
