I can't get the game to install on WINXP..I get some error about not being able to unpack files needed for blah blah blah. Is there any way to get this old but great flight sim to work on XP ?

While I'm on the subject, is there any good WW I flight sims out there ?

Hmm, I didn't have any problems installing WW2 Fighters in WinXP. Make sure your Installer software is upto date(MSI-or something like that). SP! should take care of it, but I dunno.

As for WW1 flight Sims. Try out the "Wings of Honour" demo, seemed pretty nice.

Man, I've been saying this for 3+ years now, but I need to get a Throttle/Joystick setup soon. I have Falcon 4, WW2 Fighters, IAF, and Independence War 2 gathering dust for lack of a decent controller! :)

doh, went to the Microsoft site and realized I probably needed the update when I was still using Win 98SE and not XP. It seems WinXP already has the latest version so you need not worry about that then.

I dunno what to suggest, except you could try to extract all the contents to the HD in a virtual CD drive using Alcohol 120 % then installing from there.

Yup, using Win XP and it works, but I may have actually Installed it when I was still using Win98SE. A few of my games survived the OS switch, though the Play option doesn't show when inserting the disk(which is the case with WW2 Fighters). So I'm probably wrong in my earlier claim. :(

What you might try doing, is to Explore Disk 1, then right click on the Setup.exe, then set it to Win98 Compatibility, and then try to Install it. I don't know if that will work, but I just tried it on a cd file and Windows didn't object to it. For whatever that's worth.

I went to EA's website to try and find some help, but couldn't find any mention of the game and my Search turned up nothing. You may need to try the Alcohol 120% Virtual CD suggestion, it'll rip the files from the cd then you can set Compatibility modes all you need.

So Sandor..you didn't do a clean install of XP....shame .... shame;)
I tried that compatability thing and it didn't work. I might just be forced to hit the alcohol. Thanks for your time .

btw.....IL2 Sturmovik is another kick-ass flight sim if you haven't already tried it. It was the first one to knock WWIIF off the "king of" hill. Sadly there are no P-38's or Mustangs to fly.

 :( :)

I'd love to get IL2 Sturmovik, heard so much about it, but I've got a stack of flightsim games already that I've barely played. Gotsta get Throttle/joystick, preferably that Saitek I've been eyeing which I believe has now been replaced. :D

In an effort to redeem myself, I am going to Delete, then Re-install it to see what happens. :)

Hmm, just re-installed and it worked fine, albeit quite slow to Install. Do you have any scratches or dirt on your cd? Try washing in with soap and water and dry thoroughly, that's worked for me a few times with funky discs.

I got it to work ! here's what I did....I had an old drive image back up of my games partition from win98...I just extracted it to another partition in my XP set-up and crossed my fingers as I clicked the exe...it worked.
I'm thinking that your install worked because you upgraded to XP from 98 so it must have copied certain files or whatchmacallits and your unpacking problems were not stopping you.

You wouldn't happen to know if there are any WWI flight sims around .....would you?

Now excuse me I have a date with a P-38. ;)

Nope, I tried an Upgrade but it was totally FUBARed, had to do a clean install. OTOH, many of my old Win98 game installs still worked, so something may have stuck. I dunno. :) Glad you got it working though.

Try the demo I mentioned earlier, Wings of Honour.
