Wut is faster: P3 550E@733 or a C2 633@950?

Both would be running on a BX board, so P3 has 133FSB compared to the 100mhz FSB for the c2.

Which would be faster? About the same?

That would probably be a close one. I'm afraid I don't have a definite answer for you. Toms Hardware did a comparison of an overclocked 566@850 several months ago and compared that to a whole array of PIII's and older celerons. The C566@850 looks to be a bit faster than a PIII 700 but slower than a PIII 667. If I were guessing, I would probably root for 633@950. You can see the whole article here or go here to just look at the benchmarks.

probably really similar to each other but in most games im sure cel2 is faster. the difference between C2 and P3 is amount of cache and how it's used. Cel has half the L2 cache of p3 (256kbytes). and Cel's L2 cache associativity is 4way set instead of 8 way of P3. however the core is exactly the same.

So u'll see most advantage of P3 in Cache intensive programs. such as Excel and 3d studio .

also u have to realize that hitting 133fsb will be harder then 100fsb for older motherboards(BXchipset). If you have newer motherboard i815E or Via133 then they have right dividers so only cpu is stressed more.

And in price/performance ratio celeron is much great performer. If you found both processors for same price and have good ram and motherboard then you might want P3 as it might edge c2 with higer fsb.

:)

If I bench my Cel2 533@850 and my PIII600@600 in the same machine, the PIII still beats it in 3DMarks by about 700 marks. So I would say the PIII.

Check sig for specs, tested on fisrt system.

Its super easy to hit 133FSB on BX boards, just need the right ram. I'm already doing it, heck I even had my 550E up to 825 (150FSB). I'm just deciding what to do, I'm either going to blow it out and get a Thunderbird system or I'm going to throw a c2 system together with some spare parts I have.

it's a close call i agree, but for overall performance, the P3's usually edge out highly clocked cel II's... and if you can use the 133 FSB, and have your Ram at that speed, your memory will run a lot harder and be much more useful than the 100 fsb of a celeron... my system does a sandra memory bench @ +- 1 of the Atlon 1 gig synthetic system and beats out the P3 1 gig!

i had the exact setup a while back and it all depends on the apps you run.....Quake 3/Open GL likes the Pentium 3 while most direct3d games play faster on my Celeron 2. Business applications will like the p3 because its l2 cache is larger than the Celly and those tend to utilize the p3 best.

hmmm didnt know that bx boards do 150fsb. interesting. i said its hard to do on bx boards cause other componets have to do well also instead of just cpu stressing on via133 and 810 and 815 boards.

however if u do have that 150fsb going somehow, i think that should be faster then any c2 now.

I went from a C2 633@950 to a P3 500@750 on a CUSL2. The P3 appears to be faster in gaming, and scored higher 3DMarks. Even with the P3 clocked 500@700, the P3 appears to be faster.

P3 definitely if you are gaming. the P3 will beat out that celeron @950 esp if you are using a 133mhz memory bandwith on the P3. If you were using a VIA board, i'd say the celeron because you'd still be able to run the chip 950 and the memory at 133mhz.

Nah! Sure overall they're probably quite similar, with the PIII edging it out in certain applications, but the Celly will kick the PIII's @zz in OGR. So buy that Celly and crack for TeAm AnandTech! :)
