WU Cache Program for Mac? ANOTHER 100% DEDICATED COMPUTER IF POSSIBLE

I'm wondering if there's a WU caching program available for Mac (not OS X - OS 8.1 is what I have). If there is, then there's a computer that'd be able to run SETI 100% of the time. Thanks...

I don't know anything about Macs but this might work for OS 8.6- OS 8.9. Haven't found anything for OS 8.1 yet but I'm looking.

This page may have something usefull bu the content is old and predates version 3.0 of the seti client (current version is 3.03).

Oh and I just remebered try to PM Daovonnaex I think he knows a lot about running SETI on a Mac.

Do you have or can you network the Mac to the rest of your network? If so you could set up setiq on one of your PCs and have the mac draw units from it.

The problem is is that mom'd be pissed about having (another) cord running from the router to another room. There's already one running from the router to my room that she isn't especially fond of, but has learned to live with. I can use that connection to flush the cached WU's on the Mac if only I could find a caching program (by unplugging my connection for a little bit). See the dilema? Too bad the GUI version doesn't cache WUs, otherwise I'd have no problems at all.

EDIT: About SUM - I only have OS 8.1 on the Mac. It requires a minimum of OS 8.6 (which is a free upgrade from OS 8.5, which is not free). If some one knows of where I can get a copy of OS 8.5 or higher (spending no, or very little, cash at all), that'd work too.

Well, you could check eBay. It looks like the going price will be around $50. Whether it's worth the cost is up to you.

Alternatively, you could post a message in the For Sale/For Trade forum, saying you want to buy/trade for Mac OS 8.5.

Good luck!

<< someone get this man a cheap 4 port hub 😛 >>

So (call me a newbie if you wish), is this how the I'd do the setup then w/ the hub?:

Modem to router, router to hub, hub to computers?

I think we may be on to something (able to bypass the cache all together and use the GUI version in the background).

yeah, thats the general idea.
there are a few details though
do you already have a hub you can use?
if so, does it have an uplink port?
if it has an uplink port, just use your normal cable from the router to the hub
if the hub doesnt have an uplink port, you will need what is called a crossover(also known as rollover) cable to go from router to hub.
then just normal ethernet cable to the computers from the hub.

It sounds like you have a 1-port router. If you get a cheap 4-port 10 Mbps hub you'll be able to hook up all your computers to the router at the same time so they can all go online at the same time.

I do have a 4-port router. However, the router's in another room (next to the other computer where the cable modem is). It does have 2 free ports on it right now. The problem lies in that my family'd complain if I ran yet another ethernet cord to my room from where the router is.

You don't need to... just get an el cheapo hub, connect the wire you have going to the PC in your room to the hub, then connect the rest of your PCs to the hub...

The router will serve them all IP addresses if you are running DHCP.

Like zeruty said... make sure it has an uplink port... it will make your life easier.

<< I don't have a spare laying around... but, will this help?:Network kit >>

It would help if I needed all of that extra junk along with the hub. All computers are set up with cards, etc. already. Thanks anyway though! 😉

I'll hit Best Buy (and some misc other discount computer places around) tomorrow to see what I can find. I'll keep you updated...

EDIT: I also found a bunch of decent hubs on eBay as well (brand new Linksys 5-port for $20 or so). If I can't find anything in town, I'll probably go there.

I got a Linksys 5 port + uplink 10/100 switch for like $20 at my local Best Buy a few months ago, they're not very expensive.
