WTH I added 3rd U160 SCSI drive and they keep failing back to narrow? *solved*

I previously had only a Seagate x15-36lp and a Maxtor atlas10k III running fine at U2W.

Now I added another 10k III and they all fail back to narrow?

I have the x15 set to ID0 and the 10KIII's set at ID1 and ID2 respectively.

They are all on the same channel on a Tekram DC390Uw with nothing else attached. LVD terminator on the end.

What the hell am I missing here? I am stumped.

Is there a jumper on the SE position? If so, that makes the drive single-ended and the entire chain will be forced into that mode.

I wish it was something as simple as that. I would have this resolved by now. I am getting tired of pulling these drives out and double checking them.

<< If you don't have a 64-bit PCI controller then perhaps that is your problem. >>

I don't think so, I have never owned a mobo with a 64bit slot and have never had this problem with multiple LVD drives. So my controller would have been running 32bit, and I am currently running a 32bit only controller without his symptoms.

I have four 10k/u160 drives on one 32bit channel with no problem. But, when I was reinstalling drives into enclosure I pushed one pin on 68pin connector half way in. I didn't bend it, just pushed it in with plug. It forced the drive into 40MB mode, but just this one. It took me an hour to find the problem and 15 sec. to fix it. Maybe you've got unconnected pin responsible for LVD versus SE operation (this would force the whole channel into SE). [Sorry, I'm not an expert on plugs.]
I suggest, try to connect them one or two at the time and see how they post to see if problem is in a single drive or the whole setup.

Guzik's right: go into the SCSI BIOS during Post [it's CTRL-A for adaptec cards]. If your new drive doesn't show with the others, disconnect the others and see whether it detects at all. Still no luck? -- check the jumpers [DO NOT set the jumper for enable WIDE, because ultra 160 is much faster and this will drop your speed down to 40mb/s -- thanks MoMean].

Heh. He called me a noob. ;-)

Yup, regarding SCSI I am no expert. Problem solved, simple port arrangement screw up and a bios update for Cheetah drives. Thanks anyway.
