WTH, FDISK builds only 8.066GB partition, then...

This is on a 9.11GB scsi drive and FDISK only builds a 8.066GB partition (something like that), then once I format the disk and install win2k, when I go into the computer management / diskmanager, it shows 722Mb of unallocated space. I can then format that, but end up with another partion. Why is it not being defined all the way in FDISK? The board bioses should handle that size. Tried two boards, which are P2B and Supermicro P6SBA. I even tried the IBM drive install utility, just in case. :Q

[*]no need to use fdisk if you are installing 2K/XP....you can create/delete partitions and format

I would kill the MBR on the drive (I'd use IBM's zap if it was an IDE disk, but I'm not sure if it will work on a SCSI disk) & then boot off the 2K CD & let the installation handle everything.

You did a low level format and there is still a hidden partition?

DEBUG is another option.

I'm gonna blow the partitions out again, then try just letting Win2k install it again, and leave the partitioning and formatting all up to Win2k. So far,
I have :
Fdisked and formatted
Low level formatted
Tried tried using the IBM disk setup utility, but it gives same formatted size as fdisk.

The only thing I did not do, is let Win2k handle it, since I figured I'd get the same result....but like they say, never assume.

Now if the raid array I am rebuilding from raid 5 to raid 0 would hurry up, I can get on with this. Damn, that takes along time!

I wonder if there are other nuts that sit around working on computers this late at night?

I wonder if this is not a problem with either the SCSI host adapter BIOS or more probably the version of fdisk used. Was that an older DOS fdisk?

Actually, the scsi host adapter used is an Adaptec AHA-2940W, but it is only being used for testing purposes, until the mobo, which has an onboard U160 controller is here, mid week. For now, all I am doing is testing drives and controllers, as well as the raid system that is going in it. It's all just kinda hooked up on the bench right now.

Update: Letting the Win2k installation handle it all, got me 8738mb, which is more like it.

Steve. I can not tell you why this happens but by letting the Win 2000 setup do it for you has been a solution for me in the past.

Even when I bought Win XP I let the OS handle it for me.

Sorry, it's an Intel / Supermicro rig. It's for someone else, not me...even gets Rambus. He just brought me all the parts, without prior consultation. :Q
