WTH? DivX 5 Athlon Optimized?

I haven't noticed any sort of improvement either...where exactly is this 25% supposed to come into play?

<< I haven't noticed any sort of improvement either...where exactly is this 25% supposed to come into play? >>

like mccarthy said, the improvements dont come in when you are playing a movie, rather making them. when you take the uncompressed movie footage (.avi's i believe) from home video and put them into the compressed divx 5 format, THAT is when they will go 20-25% faster on athlons.

<<I haven't noticed any sort of improvement either...where exactly is this 25% supposed to come into play?>>

Hmph... you can notice some hard drives being 40% faster than some other, but not the 25% improvement in encoding speed?

I'm pretty sure DivX was already optimized for SSE2/P4 chips, so the Athlon optimizations are "new news" while SSE2 was already there. Not sure though, could be wrong.

I played around with the codec last and didn't notice much of a difference (colors take on a higher vibrance at lower bitrates though 🙂). 1 more thing...when playing back a 2 minute avi divx5 clip (edward scissorhands) in 720*480 (i crop) @25 fps with 160Kbps divx audio codec (another new feature) (avi bit rate 1010 kbps single-pass) I WAS USING 100~89% CPU WHEN PLAYING ENCODED AVI THROUGH WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 6.4.

I have w2k pro, Radeon 7500, 512 sdram cl2@150 mhz, AthlonXP @1650mhz, (11*150), IWILL kk266+. No probs before on this system ever. Been running like a wet dream for over 6 months.

Any suggs?

what's w/ CNET's forced registration???? - fvck divx, i'd rather pay for a DVD than register...

it's enough that they force net ads down your throat - now thyeh're forcing registration w/ freeware?....bitches

DivX5 Pro is also free, I heard that you just have to uncheck the add program from msconfig so it won't load = free DivX5 Pro without adds.

I did a test encode couple nights ago, no speed improvements whatsoever and the video was completely fukt... I propably did something wrong, have to test some more.

I have noticed more of quality differenece with Divx5 than speed. The encoding speed is about the same, but the quality of the encoding over 4.12 is a 100% better. Nice having near DVD quality rips on 1 CD.

What software are you all using to encode? XMPEG?

"uncheck the ad program from msconfig"..

does that make any sense?...to me it doesn't...the ads are part of a single executable file....where the hell does msconfig come into play?

i'll check out the doom9 site and see if they have the codec minus ad for d/l

divx 5 is ad optimized.

I too have noticed the quality improvement. Now when I set it to higher bitrates (6000 or more) I can sit right on my monitor and not be able to tell the difference between the DVD and DivX 5.

Ive been extremely pleased with the new DivX5, its just a shame that they have to start paying royalties for MPEG4 and add the advertising.

i just realized that they have a standard version that's add free - tho it lacks a couple features....none i'd be prone to use anyway (probably...then again, i've no clue what they due or what they are yet...haven't looked into it).

and apparently, doom9 has a way of removing the ads in the pro version - i just can't seem to find that part tho it states it and provides a link directly on the front page.

install divx5 pro, use adaware to remove SPYWARE (or just do it manually... with a little registry work and 3 directory deletes you can do it). i haven't actually seen any ads, so I assume the ads were in the spyware. if they want to show me ads in something else, thats ok, but not in spyware.

You'll only see the 25% speed boost if your doing 2pass encoding and then only on the second pass if you checked the "Use MV file" box. If your doing 1 pass encoding you won't see a drop in encodng times at all.

Sorry if I didn't make any sense... I'll just copy & paste the info from Doom9:

...but here's something better: How to deactivate the ad tool altogether (don't remove it though.. that may cause problems): Press Start - Run, enter msconfig, click on the Startup tab and uncheck gain_trickler_3102, then reboot and the app is no longer active.

I can't confirm does this work tho..

Can you view DivX5 on standard DVD players that support VCD?

If not, what are your options for playback to television? Streaming video doesn't ever seem to work on TV-outs.

No, your DVD/VCD player will not play DivX movies
