He doesn't have to be, it would just be a bit odd if this was a sequel and they all of a sudden changed the race of the main character. It would be a bit different if they reboot the series.

They are essentially rebooting the series, which is one of the big reasons it does not matter.

true. but it just does not fit with the history of spider man. it would be weird seeing a black spider man.

it would be like makeing super man black. it owuld be weird to the series.

though long as its better the spider man 2-3 i really don't care if they made him a black jewish man from Australia.

I think the point is that he is a marvel comics character, Peter Parker, who was white originally. Like someone said, it's like taking a black character and having a white man play him. It's not correct.

Not that I care who plays him.

This. I won't be watching it.

Pretty Much this.

There are exceptions to this, like Nick Fury; whilst originally white; hes black in the Ultimate universe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Nick_Fury

There hasn't been a black Spiderman in the comics, so it just doesn't make sense.

He shoots webs from his wrists and sticks to walls, its not meant to make freaking sense!

Hell I cant believe you lot are getting worked up about this, its not like Peter Parker being white was vital to the Spiderman story.

Whatever, The Last Airbender is using a bunch of ethnicities non-conformant to their original characters. Who gives a crap.

Spiderman 2 is the best one. :hmm:

Changing characters mid-stream is definitely annoying, but when it is essentially a re-boot, then it makes no difference to me at all. They could make Spiderman an Asian Lesbian and I'd be fine with it as long as they did a good story and the actress was decent. I guess I just don't have a huge attachment to these characters and have no problem with fictional characters being re-imagined for a different production.

It must be vital though because I would imagine tens of thousands of people will refuse to see this movie simply because the main character's black. There's a fucking petition so apparently this is really important to a lot of people. Thankfully, the majority of people won't skip seeing a movie for a trivial fact like this. I mean Tom Cruise was the last Samurai, I didn't see many people up in arms over a white dude as a Samurai. I'll probably skip out on seeing it because I'm sure it'll suck, the others were HORRIBLE fucking movies.

Oh noes! Liberal Hollywood is trying to steal Spiderman's essential whiteness! Now people who have never read a comic book in their lives will be up in arms about a character they didn't give two shits about a week ago. This is all trickle-down blackness from Obama anyway. OBAMA IS TRICKLING ON US ALL.

2 was good. but not as good as 1. hell i actually enjoyed 3 (well not the scene where he is walking down the street..and venom could been better).

I have to admit i have a strong attachment to spider man. i been collecting ALL the comics since i was 13 and im 36 now..only time i didn't care for it was the clone saga oh and when they "rebooted" the story saving aunt may and having peter not be married anymore.

but if the story is good i will watch it..and buy it heh.

Meh, it's no more distracting than changing the actor who portrayed Batman over the years.

Would this be better or worse than Prince of Persia- a movie with no Persians in it and a white main character with a bad British accent?

That's exactly why I think the PoP movie is going to be terrible. I just can't get past JJ as whateverhisnameis.

Fair enough, if you have a strong attachment to a character from the very beginning I can understand it more. I kind of like the creative side of things though, where people try and do an interesting take on a traditional character/theme/genre. It can be so much fun if done well, though it's often not done well. :\

FWIW I liked 3 as well, though I did not like a lot of the action parts, more of the story bits. The personal side of Spiderman is what makes him such a great character with a relatable story, more than a character like Batman who is not really relatable at all (I like Batman a lot, but more because of the cool baddassery than the personal, character side of things).

Agreed. If it sucks, then who cares? If it's great then Woo Hoo!!! Kind of like casting Robert Downey Jr in the role of Iron Man. He's never done an action movie but he made the first movie IMO.

It doesn't matter what they want, Marvel (and ultimately Stan Lee) have final say in their character...

Whether it be Peter Parker or Miguel O'Hara, Spiderman was and is always white.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man cannot be black; he was a scientist and everyone knows that even Hispanics are better at science than black people.

It's like having a welsh, scottish, or irish actor playing james bond... or worse, australian.

oh oh.... didn't they have white people playing in madam butterfly?

i think the only black guy that can pull off the nerdiness is Steve Urkel , he should play spider man.

Spider Man should be played by a transgender woman. If spider man is not played by a transgender woman that is sexist and I will tweet about it!!

**yes that was a joke**

The Liberal News: If you have a problem with a widely-known character who's been around since 1962 suddenly pulling a reverse Michael Jackson for no reason, you're racist.

Seriously, it's like getting a traditional Christmas tree and then hand painting it pepto-bismal pink. Sure you can do it and it may look quite nice, but everyone's still going to look at it and go WTF. But that's cool to the pink Christmas tree owner, as obviously all these people are simply insecure in their sexuality and have something against the color pink. Even the females.
