What exactly is this text? I could see that easily being abused by spammers.

it depends of windows version. windows 7 has this issue, which is probably 2d font rendering bug. It is also visible in taskbar.

Windows 8 is affected. Chrome shows the squiggles slanted to the left. IE shows them going straight up.
