<< couldnt find it in the regedit... >>

Hmm... I've trouble finding it myself as well.

At times like this I would give just about anything for Linux with its uncomplicated config files 😉

In regedit, navigate to HKCU/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Control Panel. If there is an entry there for HOME, delete it. If that's your problem, you should be able to reset your home page after rebooting.

Use msconfig to look at all the startup things that run. Do any of them say anything like "regedit -s <filename>" ? If so, that's what's probably doing it. Look at the contents of that file in a editor and you'll see the registry settings it's fooling with.

And check here for more in-depth information.

kranky, nothing weird was in that folder... and where is msconfig located? i did a search for it but couldnt find it...

running win 2k, and am always logged in as Admin

Oops, sorry Beast, I didn't realize they didn't put msconfig in Win2000. 😱

In win2000, is it

Right click on 'My computer',
>Select Manage
>Click on Service and Applications
>Click on Services

If you can run regedit then you can look for startup programs in :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

There are also keys similar to Run called RunOnce, RunOnceEx, and sometimes RunEx ... check all of these for any suspicious entries.

Those are the two places besides the standard C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup (both appear in your start menu) locations to look for startup items. You can also look in your system.ini and win.ini located in your Windows directory to see if you have any entries that say "RUN=" in the beginning ... thats the old Windows 3.1 way to run programs at startup.

porn site pisses me off
warez site pisses me off
both are in the same boat, they spam like hell, they're so gay, sick, and perverted. both need to be locked up in the jail for illegal activity.

Morpheus will have sometimes scripts that are executed automatically...this comes bundled with some mp3s or videos and u will know it because u either can't preview the audio/video and also the file size might be extremely fishy...in any case, after i got Norton Firewalll, No script, No pop-up ads, and esp. No ads.x10 or that online gambling ad = Very Happy customer

i am going to cry.... 🙁

i find this crap in registry, the two folders who are the culprits are MovieNetworks and MedCh...

i delete everything i can find on these two things, and they always come back... even when i delete them from registry...

Do they come back before you run IE?

If so, try disabling all types of scripting in IE, remove them again, restart the computer, remove them again if necessary, and then open up IE. Now that site shouldn't be able to run scripts...

try changing the homepage through the registry key
HKEY_Current_User -> Software -> Microsoft -> Internet Explorer -> Main -> Start Page

I haven't had this specific problem, but I did have a program do something similar to me. I believe it was part of Comet Cursor, but it could have been another program. I would look at your system processes again and do a search on yahoo.com for any files that look suspicious. If you find one that has a record you should see results pretty quickly. Once you learn what program it is, uninstall it. To help clarify how the problem took place, changes like that occur through program installation or viruses...(both being exe type files). So you will probably have to uninstall what did it. Keep searching....

My problem was that I'd close IE and walk away. I'd walk back up to my computer and it was on web page.... I'd close the window and at random increments of time, it would spawn another page and so on. This is because someone is trying to rack up $$$ on advertising redirects...
