I just put together my new system last night.. boot it up, running at 30 degrees idle. I think to myself, that's pretty good. After 5 hours of prime95, various loops of sandra testing, and an hour of CS, I'm still only at 34 degrees! Can my cooling really be that good?? It's pretty cold in this room, I have 6 fans in the case (Antec SX 1040B), an SK-6 with a 38 cfm delta fan on top of an Athlon XP 1700+ @ 1800+, and shuttle AK31A motherboard.. this is just weird.

Nope.. case temps hover around 19 to 21 degrees.. this is nice. :) Time to up the voltage, and go for 1900+ speeds. :)

Just remember that socket-thermistor temps are quite a bit lower than the actual temp of the cpu core, espceially for Athlon XP.
Your temps aren't actually that good with that low case temp, a difference of 11C is much for Athlon XP, my case temp is 32 and the cpu is 36C with an Alpha PAL8045 with a Papst 46,5cfm fan.
Remember that different mobos give different temps though.

All socket thermistors are WAAAAAAAY off. There is no accuracy etc. etc. I wish Mikewarrior was here.

I bet if you took that same HSF and chip and put it on my mobo your readings would be WAAAAAAAY different. Still though, I'm sure you can go for the gusto... giver.

Well, the ak31a has a voltage problem.. won't supply enough voltage to initially get the processor to post if i up it to 1.85. But when I up it to about 1.80, I can hit 1570 or so, stable.. 1600 was stable for quite a while, but gave me a BSOD (weird looking in Win2k) after about 2 hours of prime95/Counter-Strike.

Temperatures aren't my problem... I can't get my system above 36 degrees Celcius, no matter what I do.. I think what's messing me up is probably my hard drive (crappy, old, bad clusters, etc). I need to find an easy voltage mod for the ak31 that doesn't require soldering.. I'm horrible at it.

I'll be honest. Ya know, I always thought Mike was just nuts. Im one of those stubborn guys that must see it before I'll believe it. Mike is right on about what he says, and so are these other guys.

Socket A temp readings suck big time. Mine was always showing 109 F for a temp..couldnt get it to raise for nothing. So then I installed a Digital Doc 5 to settle my curiousity. On average, a socket A temp is off by 15 degrees. I was actually running at 124. Now that my room is sssooo cold (59 in the day when im not here), it runs at 101.3. Btw, since installing Digital Doc 5 it is very easy to see the temps rise and fall....much more accurate than the socket a reading.

Funny, I know i'm nuts ;)...

The thing is with socket-a readings: I did at least 6-9 months of research about socket-thermistor stuff before i even posted about it... from the people I talk to, and seen work from, i know this sounds pompous, but i know that socket-thermistors are not accurate. There are too many variables that prevent them from being even considered remotely accurate :).

That being said, even a digidoc reading is a bit off from full core temp :)... Expect the socket-thermistor to be even further than the 15F average off die temps.

Whoops...shoulda stated that before, MY average was 15 degrees off on my board. Sorry, that was kinda a misleading statement seeing how many people have reported temps further off than that!

I figured a digital doc would be off to seeing how you cant get the temp right off of the core (probably a probe that could be laid across the majority of the core would be best?) but it sure beats having the very misleading motherboard temp output. 109 109 109..hey ill overclock the FSB 13mhz...109 109 109...Yea, im doing good. NOT!! hahaha
