WTF?

I just got home from GameStop, and I put MG disc in. I click on the box on the Wii Menu to launch the game, and it takes me to a screen that says:

IMPORTANT: If you do not want to accept this upgrade, you can shut down your Wii console and cancel the upgrade by holding down the Power Button for four (4) seconds. If your Wii consoles has an unauthorized technical modification, this upgrade could cause inoperability of your console.

WTF?

Because I should be able to do whatever the fuck I want to my console. I don't have a mod chip, but if I want to install it on something I paid for I should be able to.

I dont see how it's a forced update like you claim. In your post, you even have the instructions on how to NOT accept the update.

I did what the screen said to do, and when I tried to play the game again, it brought me back to the same screen saying I needed to do the update.

Because it wouldn't let me play a game I bought until I performed the system update.

If you had a mod chip why would you buy the game?

Anyway, they have just as much of a right to force you to update as you do to choose not to update. You might get left out of playing some games but they would then be left out of making some money. Somehow this leads to Profit! for both of you.

I do not have a modchip on my Wii, and have never pirated anything in my life, so you can take your baseless accusations and go fuck yourself. If I did install one, it would be for home brew/development purposes. I did it with my DS, and feel that a system update shouldn't render my console useless if I wanted to do the same with my Wii.

what's the big deal then? PSP has been doing this, and eventually the PS3 likely will: certain games will come preloaded with certain updates that have to be installed. It's because the game was coded with that update in mind, possibly taking advantage of better system code or something along those lines.

PS3 is already doing this. I believe they automatically come with the lowest firmware necessary to play the game, and R&C shipped with 1.94 (which was never officially released).

yup. pretty much in place to make sure you have the proper updates to actually play the game. in place most likely for people who don't have wifi.

although, I'm not sure why it would actually update if yours is up to date.. unless it has additional mario specific updates. i was always curious about that with MP3 since my system had the latest firmware.

That's becoming pretty common now... Xbox games will kick you off Xbox Live if you don't install an update for a game (the update is for the game, not the system, but similar concept). PSP will not play games unless the required firmware is installed. It could be because the new firmware includes additional features, or it could be for piracy prevention. I really don't think it's something to complain about.
