Why wasn't that jerk fired? He had an obligation to do his job or he needs to change professions. :|:|:|

Texas Pharmacist Denies Pill to Rape Victim
Tue February 3, 2004 03:25 PM ET

DALLAS (Reuters) - Eckerd Corp. said on Tuesday it had disciplined one of its pharmacists after he refused to fill the prescription of a rape victim seeking a morning-after abortion pill.

The pharmacist considered it a violation of morals to give a rape victim, with a valid prescription, a pill that would prevent her from getting pregnant due to the sexual assault, the company said. The incident took place on Jan. 23 at an Eckerd drug store in the Dallas suburb of Denton.

Eckerd spokeswoman Joan Gallagher said she could not give details of the disciplinary actions, but said the pharmacist had violated company policy.

"A pharmacist is obliged to fill a prescription if it is a valid, legal prescription," she said. "We do not make exceptions for any moral, religious or ethical concerns with regard to filling the prescription."

Florida-based Eckerd is owned by Texas-based retailer J.C. Penney.

Protesters, carrying signs reading "Got Raped? Let someone else help you" and "Rape violates my morals," have been picketing the store this week.

The rape victim was able to have her prescription filled at a Walgreen's pharmacy in the area, they said.

Another situation where a Fund A Mental Case Whacko projects his own morals on someone else. He should not only be fired, he should have his license revoked!

That was just fsking wrong. He should be punished somehow by his company. Not only is he putting forth a bad image for his company, but he denied help to a rape victim by NOT doing his job. Heck, most people I know who oppose abortion would not have denied the perscription as that guy did.

I am so sick of sinners hijacking religion to promote their political agenda. God and Jesus doesn't need fscking morons and ignoramuses to represent him. How is using religion as a "political tool" any different than Islamic fundementalists trying to take over a government. The people who are the most eager to post the "ten commandments" in public places should really study it in their spare time.

You shouldn't do anything you consider wrong no matter the consequences. Hats off to the fellow. WHy should he be forced to give out abortion pills if he feels it is wrong. They have no other pharmacies or pharmacists?
Next thing you guys will be saying that doctors should be forced to perform abortions whther they like it or not.I wouldnt give someone an abortion pill either.

[edit] P.S. I obviously would have given it to her (and am a big fan of morning-after pills otherwise) but on another point, hypothetically, at least, if she were a normal girl having had sex through consentual means, should a privately-owned pharmacy be forced to give her the pills?

I think Bomberman goes to the heart of it. Should a private pharmacy be forced to give her the pills. The answer is, of course, it depends. If a pharmacy is considered a private business like an ice cream parlor, why should it. Ever two-bit pizza joint and bar in the U.S. carries a sign that says, "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone." On the other hand, if you consider it in the nature of a public service, like the phone company. The answer is different. I don't know the facts of this case but, I don't think you should force the Charitable Sisters of St. Mary to dispense something that goes against their basic beliefs. On the other hand, if this was Sav-On Pharmacy, the answer might be different.

That's the stupidest $hit I've read in a long time.
So, if a doc happens to be part of a religious sect which considders blood transfusion a sin, he/she shouldn't help someone who is going to die without it?

He should have just asked another pharmacist to fill the prescription.

Yes.

He should have his pulled.
Why?

I don't approve of his actions, but I think someone should play devils advocate here.

Lawyers don't have to take cases that they morally object to, why should a pharmacist be forced to fill a prescription that violates his personal moral code? I agree that his employer should be able to fire him (I have no objections to that), but I don't see why his license should be pulled.
There are other pharmacists who would (and I assume did) fill the prescription, right?

So are you saying that morality has no place in the workplace? That morality has no bearing on how one conducts themselves professionally?

Simply because when he took the job as a pharmacist he should have freaking known that he might run into this situation.

When he took the job of pharmacist did he or did he not know that he might have to disperse morning after pills? If he did know, then he should not have taken the job.

Was this guy the owner or an employee? Is it company policy not to give the pill out or his own?

This kind of reminds me of Judge Moore. Whether or not you agreed with his stance, he broke the rules. Whether or not you agree with the pharmacist, did he break the rules?

I'm not talking about this guy in particular, I'm talking about a broader question of whether morality should have any bearing on how someone conducts themselves professionally.

MDs do not have to perform abortions on demand. Neither do nurses, nor do they have to give prescriptions for it. Pharmacists are health professionals and should have that right too. So what if someone went to a doc and asked for an abortion and got a no? She would go somewhere else and get it. Same goes here.

"A pharmacist is obliged to fill a prescription if it is a valid, legal prescription," she said. "We do not make exceptions for any moral, religious or ethical concerns with regard to filling the prescription."

I think it's obvious that, whether or not you agree with his morals, the pharmacist broke company policy. He should either conform with policy, or get a new job.
