renting Gen-Y cops from blockbuster... it's a hong kong action flick, so it is reasonable to expect that it will have a "chinese" option right? WRONG. only english. not even chinese subtitles... they have english and *french* but not chinese. no... we can't have the movie in it's goddamn original language

Hollywood killed Fist of Legend as well. Its dubbing was just retarded. I had to buy the dvd from hong kong.......

Why not order a whole bunch from SE-Asia? (Doubt it's easy to import from China, but other countries should be possible)

cuz subtitles are annoying, even more so if they're not yellow, and most of the renters probably speak english.

i could be wrong of course.

but it's a frickin' dvd... one of the big selling points of dvds is that you can have different languages and whatnot. and they have french subtitles but not chinese? i doubt there are more french people renting that than chinese people.

and for what it's worth, i find dubbed over voices to be way more annoying than subtitles.

usually yes, i agree. but it also tells you on the back of the dvd what versions are one there. who was it dubbed by? asian actors or was it a hollywood dub?

Do you live in a country where the majority of the population speaks English?

I don't understand the proliferation of French dubbed DVD's. Is it because of Canada? How many Canadians actually speak French? Surely there are more Spanish speaking people under the NTSC format than French speakers.

yea, i didn't check because it never occured to me that this would happen.... i dunno who it was dubbed by... it's that stereotypical sort of exaggerated announcer-sounding voice.

yup. i don't have any problem with them having the english track.... but to omit the original movie itself is a crime imo. i only know some chinese, not even enough to understand most of the movie, but i like to watch chinese movies in chinese because it just isn't the same when it is dubbed. the same goes for films from any foreign country actually (like france... or japan). i would much rather watch the original film with subtitles than no subtitles and dubbed speech.

I always feel like Im missing part of the movie if I only watch the bottom 1.3inches of the screen. Plus, subtitles mean I can do little else while watching a movie, or when Im tired have to rewind the movie occassionally to re-read something I did not understand or to read something I missed.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I only know English (atleast thats the only language I know well enough to watch a movie in), so I know I have no need for it to be in Chinese. Although, if you seriously think it should be a crime, I will support the death penalty against anyone that can make a movie enjoyable to people that do not understand the native language.

like i said, nothing against having an english version... but i have a problem with the fact that they did not include the original version. i wouldn't be griping about this if it wasn't a dvd... and also, i feel this way for movies of any language... not just chinese. i understand that some people don't like subtitles, and that's great that they have a dubbed version for those people. but for me, i think films are much more enjoyable when you can hear it the way it was intended to be heard.

I watched "Brotherhood of the Wolf" last night, a french film that had been dubbed, i'd agree that dubbing sux. i'd much rather read subtitles.

I don't know, but watching Starship Troopers in French is pretty damn funny.
