This is going to sound quite crazy to some, but I'll do my best to relate this.
Our family believes in Yeshua (Jesus). While December 25th is not the day He was born, it is the day that the Christian church has agreed to commerate or celebrate His birth.
A portion of the belief is that Jesus was born to give the perfect gift of His grace to mankind. Without this grace, mankind would have no hope of redemption with the Father.
The reason we exchange gifts on the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus is to honor His gift to us.
We also had a birthday cake for Jesus and sang Happy Birthday.
As much as anything else, we are trying to teach our children (through our daily life) to love God with all our thoughts, feelings and actions and to love our fellow man as Jesus has loved us.
I hope this helps.
Why did you start this wacko tradition of giving jebus a birthday cake.
I certainly can understand how it seems quite odd.
As I mentioned, our family believes in Jesus and what he represents to Christianity. We believe that, while the day He was born is not known to us, it is a wonderful thing to be able to celebrate His birthday the way we celebrate our own birthdays.
It is particularly difficult to relate this in any more specific terms, because we haven't established a context for the discussion, other than you find the whole idea of a birthday cake and songs to be difficult to relate to or understand.
