If we make it legal to carry conceal weapons then there will be a lot of people who will go and get it. Because if you know a bunch of people have it then you will want one to "protect" yourself. Look at the way countries are trying to develop nuclear technologies to keep up and "protect" themselves from countries that already have it. Anyone with a clean record and patience can get a license...that doesn't mean that those people won't ever kill anyone with that power. They can either flip out because their wife/husband cheated on them. They can accidentally jump to conclusions and mistakenly shoot someone over a misunderstanding because they thought the other guy had a gun and was putting them in danger. STUPID PEOPLE WILL GET THEIR HANDS ON THE GUN...GUARANTEED. Why make it legal to carry them and force other people to feel they have to get one to protect themselves?

your logic is fail

haha can't argue with that one. but whatever it is your opinion. i would just rather have a country that isn't like the countries in the middle east where guns are carried around in public, especially by kids. if you don't think escalation is inevitable then i don't know what to say. eventually automatic weapons will become legal. then armor piercing rounds. etc.

automatic weapons are legal in some places. silencers and suppressors too. not sure about the ammo tho.

Let me make sure I understand this. Pro gun people are saying this is a case for CCW?

I despise guns and yes, this is a perfectly logical argument for CCW.

I know this is going to sound like a very roundabout argument but I think this speaks AGAINST CCW. Proponents of guns are always saying that CCW people are safer, more trained, etc.

Let's put aside the very sad nature of events, which we all agree on. This is a case of a highly effective gunman. The most effective in US history (as far as school shootings go). I have to assume this is the very type of trained individual epitomizes the CCW model. If he was just some wack job without proper training, like in 90% of other "mass" shooting cases, he would have killed a lot less people.

Assuming the US will never grant every individual CCW (meaning little chance of citizen intervention), and guns are in the hands of the same people that they are now (mix of legal, illegal, ccw, and non-ccw), which would you rather have, in a pure numbers standpoint?

32 dead (and possibly rising) -or- 5, 1, 2?

You are dense. IT IS NOT AN IRRATIONAL FEAR OF A GUN. IT IS THE FEAR TOWARDS THE PEOPLE WHO CAN POTENTIALLY WIELD IT.

But anyone can potentially wield it, and that has nothing to do with the legality/illegality of firearms.

You can also be afraid of someone who is high on meth, and that's already illegal.

If someone wants something, they'll be able to get it.

So there were 2 seperate shootings? Was it 1 guy acting alone, or was it a group?

yeah its nto very clear on that. anyone know?

it's not confirmed yet...all i know is police reports may be pondering toward to one gunman but it depends. matching the gun bullets would solve the problem.

Im still in complete shock and the numbers keep rising...

100s dieing daily in iraq, kids shooting kids.. what is going on in this world.. Im getting so depressed reading all this news..

Dont be depressed, its a drop in the bucket.

According to the CIA World Factbook, as of July, 2005, there were approximately 6,446,131,400 people on the planet, and the death rate was approximately 8.78 deaths per 1,000 people a year. According to our nifty desktop calculator, that works out to roughly 56,597,034 people leaving us every year. That's about a 155,000 a day.

Back on topic, I wonder if the new deaths are people that were in the hospital or people still on campus 🙁

Is it confirmed the shooter used a handgun? You would think you would need an assault rifle or shotgun to have that many fatalities. Either the shooter is a marksmen with a handgun or he had many many reloads.

umm...😕
no wonder people are so afraid of guns, they have no clue about them

It's a fact. Assault rifles and shotguns in the hands of a individual with minimal training will inflict more damage then a handgun. Thinks about this scenario.... I'm at the end of a long hallway with an assault rifle, you are at the opposite end of a long hallway with a handgun. Who do you think has the advantage? If the shooter today had them cornered in a small classroom, then a handgun would certainly be just as deadly.

of course an assault rifle would be more deadly, but a handgun is just as deadly.
from what i've read in this post, he killed several of them execution style, which is point blank to the back of the head. no skill needed there.

Your logic is ass - an assault rifle would be MORE deadly, but a handgun is JUST AS deadly... 😕

God I love how we get quicker news at AT than on CNN.

CNN, unlike ATOT and faux, likes to verfiy the story before they post random comments information.

I meant how we have students from VT posting here.

And how some of them have been wrong. Like someone saying there are 2 shooters then later CNN says they do that as SOP, not because there are 2 shooters.

So did CNN, they reported the same inititally. And I like knowing when something is happening as soon as it is happening. Stop argueing a stupid subject.

No they said they were looking for a 2nd shooter but they did not know if there was one as its SOP to do so.

I guess you like your news to be fast and low on facts. Let me guess you watch Fox?
OMG STFU, no I hate fox I watch CNN and MSNBC, I like to hear things right away, and I continue watching for facts stop being a douche bag.

well a handgun can kill you just as good as a rifle will.

come to think of it a knife will kill you just as much..

I don't disagree with you there. People are the ones that pull the trigger. But the comments that made me throw my 2 cents were the ones regarding the law being passed to restrict students from carrying guns on the Tech campus. People were saying that had students been allowed to carry guns that it would have defused the situation and that just does not add up to me. I think you and I got caught in a different argument.

Maybe you need to check your math then junior, cuz it sure as hell adds up to me. What's so hard to figure out about being able to defend yourself? The only thing banning guns will do is put all the guns into the hands of criminals and out of the hand sof law abiding people. Dumbasses like yourself make me sick....

Haha ok. Yes, you provide an example of when possessing a gun to defend yourself is beneficial. People are not born as law breakers and there are people, everyday, who have no criminal records that just flip out and kill/harm people. Things happen and law abiding people sometimes become criminals. To always think that the situation is going to be that ideal where it's good guy vs. bad guy and that no misunderstandings or impulsive decisions are made is to be naive. Think of all the reports of road rage and tragedies that result from it. The people involved are probably law abiding citizens yet they lose their cool and do sh1t that can potentially harm others. Put a gun in their hands and see how much worse the situations can become. There are pros and cons to both sides...I would just rather see less guns. What is so bad about that?

That picture is embarassing. In my 40 pounds of gear, I can carry another soldier in 40 pounds of gear for a decent distance in a training environment. With real adrenaline pumping, even a 200 pound unconcious man would be easy to carry for quite some distance.

The difference is splitting hairs. In a battle, the assault rifle has the advantage, but against a roomful of innocents, both are pretty much equal in killing power.
