You are both the red and blue car?

OP probably meant the "blue car" was following him, who wasn't maintaining a proper distance at 50 mph resulting in him being rear ended after cars in front of him did a sudden stop because of a yellow light that suddenly changed to red.

Wow that was a long sentence. ^_^

Fixed it to make it correct :D

It wasn't red when they decided to stop.

Now to fix my own little explanation...

keep more distance, that way even if the guy in front of you suddendly stops, you can stop in a longer path, and the others behind you will have more time to slam on the brakes.
Anyway it sounds totally retarded to have traffic lights on a 50 mph road (that's 80 km/h right?).
Why not build a roundabout instead and lower the max speed before it or something.

anyway blue car should pay if he hit you.
