WTF? trying to play unreal online with cable sends computer into deep sleep?

I have not touched a damn thing on my rig as far as hardware and slots and for whatever reason I was going to play unreal online the other week and when trying to ping the servers my computer was frozen with no sync and the lights were all on and I had to shut it off. I noticed my cable modem doesn't even start to connect when this happens.

my cousin is here and went to play starcraft the other day and it did the same thing. Yet Im able to play a few other games online like grand prix legends, everquest, counter strike and mechwarrior 4 with no problems(I have never had a computer do this turning off crap).

So I just reformatted and started with win98se clean and same hardware and its doing it again?? I haven't a damn clue what to look at here as I can boot the game up and all my games for that matter. I can play unreal practice sessions and all that. Its like with these games its looking for the net connection and freaking out and sending it to sleep or something.

Im using cable and have no options. I just have it connected through the same nic and I wouldn't be able to connect at all without the right computer name and I don't have any other settings to even mess with?

I don't want to ignore this but haven't a clue how to fix it. I leave my computer on most of the day and surf allot and I never have random crashes their and 90+% of the games I play all run fine with no problems. If I hadn't popped in these 2 games I wouldn't have thought their were any problems but I like unreal tournament allot and now a few weeks later and I cannot even get online?

any thoughts would be appreciated yall this is a wierd one

I have the same problem back then. After couple hours of troubleshooting, I found out it's memory problem. I only have 128MB. I upgraded it to 384MB and every thing works fine. Even with 256MB works fine too. One more thing I have to add is I am running Windows 2000. Windows 2000 need a lot of memory to run it smoothly.

thanks for the input dood but Im running win98se with 512mb ram and the same ram that was in my rig a few weeks ago when I played unreal tournament last. Wierd thing is I can play certain games online and unreal tournament practice fine but when it pings the servers it pauses and either shuts down before downloading a list, or starts to and the cursor slows down a ton and freezes at the screen or shuts off. un damn believable I haven't a clue how I can check on this. Im having no other windows errors or game problems period damn.

Oops, I didn't saw your rig info. Sorry!! Have you re-install Unreal Tournment or video driver? Are you behind the firewall / router?

any chance you're using ZoneAlarm? I've found that sometimes, particularly in games, you don't get the popup message about allowing the program to access the net. It just freezes everything in place.
If you are using ZoneAlarm, I'd manually add it to your "Programs" list.

EDIT: www.3dspotlight.net has confirmed this ZoneAlarm issue. Here's a quote:

"Users of ZoneAlarm will need to authorize Unreal Tournament to access both local & internet access. Doing this eliminates a crash that occurs while refreshing servers with ZoneAlarm on."

thanks for the info I was baffled when this started to happen for the first time in my year+ of playing the game. So I started with a fresh install of win98se with updated drivers. Im not using and virus software or net protection stuff.

The symptom seems clear in that I can play the practice session and get around in the program, etc. for more than an hour, but try to find net servers and bam. But jesus with cable all I do is name my computer with my account name or else I wouldn't have net access at all. I have no physical settings on my nic or modem.

And my only other option was with a proxy on or off and same result. I have no other connection options. Wow this is nuts.

1) What kind of NIC do you have, don't see it in your rig info? Latest NIC driver being used?
2) Long-shot: Did you try buffering your NIC IRQ?

PS - You not using Zonealarm with a cable connection? tisk tisk

what is buffering a nic irq mean?

Im using the same drivers with the same nic card my cable gave me during install. All I do is install drivers and leave everything default, set my computer name and proxy if I want and go.
