Really? I thought Honda would want it to go head to head with the Explorer (my mom's boss drives a '90 Explorer right now, test drove a Pilot last week and loved it. Is also going to test drive the Explorer too later this week but he's almost dead set on it after hearing a bunch of other people rave about it)

Well, yeah it will go head to head with the Explorer but Honda can't crank out enough Pilots/MDXs/Odysseys. All three of them (sharing the same platform) are in short supply. Honda is expanding on of their plants, but even that won't be enough to crank them out in "Explorer" numbers.

Bingo. Didnt the MDX have a wait list as long as its wheelbase?

Yup, waiting list for the Pilot is at least a month to two months long.

Finally the "vast right wing big oil conspiracy" gets its wheels dug in....the final objective of world domination is clearly in sight.

[Dr Evil] We will stop making SUVs if you pay us..........1 million dollars [/Dr Evil]

Can't believe they expect people to buy those things!!!

In case you didn't know, the Highlander sells VERY well. It is #10 in sales for ALL SUV's sold in America (well, #9 b/c I don't really consider the PT Cruiser an SUV):

Sales May 2002 / Sales 2002 YTD

I actually was being sarcastic. I noticed that you own a Highlander. I own an Avalanche. You made a crack on the Av, so I made a remark about your truck, to see if you enjoyed the truck crapping that you dish out.

You justify your purchase by saying it sells well, therefore it can't be ugly.

How about the Avalanche being named Truck of the Year by a popular magazine?? Hmmm...

I guess to each his own....

I never responded on the part about you saying that the Highlander was ugly...I just responded with sales numbers. Styling is subjective...

That being said, the Avalanche is the UGLIEST truck sold in America along with the Aztek😛😀🙂 I haven't seen that much grey plastic since I played with my Lego set when I was a kid 😀

I couldn't resist.

And about Motor Trend naming the Avalanche truck of the year...they also named the POS Chevy Malibu COTY a few years back.

Is it me or is the ONLY company not looking to add a bunch of new SUVs Jeep? Jeep has 3 SUVs, a small (but ultracapable), low end midsize, and a high end midsize.

... and Toyota needs EIGHT?!

I can't even think of why a company would need five muchless eight. For that matter, I can't think of five Toyota cars that aren't SUVs.

Avalanche = teh ugly.

Agreed; the Avalanche looks like ass

I thought the same thing, until I seen one lifted with some big fat monster meaty tires underneath it. I think the stock tires are just too wimpy and small looking for it.

It looked pretty damn hardcore with fatter tires, IMHO. Tried to find a pic, but am going to lunch instead.🙂

The only thing that matters is the new 4Runner. Toyota is going to kick Ford's ass again 1996-style. I wish they would keep the 3rd gen 4Runner for another year and put in the 4.7. Oh well, say bye bye to off-roading for 4Runner and bye bye to Ford Explorer sales.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA what? Toyota 4Runner has never been the #1 selling SUV since the Explorer was launched in 1990. The 4Runner wasn't even second in the late 90's - the Jeep Grand Cherokee took the #2 spot for most of the late '90s years for SUV sales. What are you talking about?
4Runner was more of a niche vehicle. It was priced higher than the Explorer and offered better off-road performance, ground clearance, fuel economy, and more rear-seat room. 4Runner wasn't one of the highest selling SUVs in the 90's, but in 1996 it was extremely hard to get your hands on one. They were selling like That *snaps fingers many times*. I'm sure Ford felt the sting of that. For 2003, it looks like Toyota is taking a more Ford Explorer route with the new 4Runner. The '03 4Runner will have a V8 as well as a V6, three-row seating, ~2" less ground clearance, and more!

Ford never felt the sting of it. I can't find the exact numbers for '96 but in '95 they sold 395,000 Explorers, '98 they sold 431,488. (That outsold the #1 car in America, the Camry which sold 429,000) And according to this site, Ford set a record for selling Explorers in Feb. 96. (Although that might be considered '97 year models) And how many people do you know buy an Explorer to go off-roading? None that I know of. You make a good point - it is more of a niche vehicle - more of a luxurious vehicle, but considering the days now of Lexus RX300, MDX's, X5s, etc, the 4Runner has to be leaps and bounds above the Explorer (and Toyota's own Highlander) to even make a dent in the Explorers sales.
