WTF? "TOTAL RECALL" Remake?

I was excited until I saw the previews. From the previews, it looked like it was trying too hard to copy the previous version of the movie line by line. Wasn't very impressive- and typically the scenes shown in the previews are the best parts of the movie... so nope.

I wouldn't say I was excited for this movie before I saw the trailers, but I saw the trailer before spiderman and it felt like an anti-trailer. I don't know if it was a bad trailer or what but as it went on I actually wanted to see the movie less and less. The movie appears to consist of just Colin Farrel punching people in a gritty setting. I was hoping they would go for a more intellectual route to cover new ground and contrast with the over the top campy Arnold version. But there were just pieces of contextless dialog interspersed with punching and dark cityscapes. If there's a complex plot underneath, none of it was conveyed in the trailer...the trailer says dumb action movie. Feels like a watch on TV movie at best. It honestly reminded me more of Underworld....which as I mentioned before are movies I'll watch if they're on but generally don't seek out.

I read Eberts review on it and from the trailer, it looks like what I expected. I'll most likely go see it; I have a free movie pass anyway.

I wonder if Paul Verhoven is pissed that they are remaking all of his best movies.

Total Recall this year, Robocop I think next year, and a new Starship Troopers is in the works.

save it for the bourne legacy
Yeah maybe I'll just do that. It expires soon but I think I'll still be able to make it in time (Legacy is on 10th it looks like). I haven't seen DKR yet either but eh, I'd way rather see Legacy than DKR.

One review I saw said that was a big problem.

Another review said the dialog sucked. So, you get a crappy versin of hte original with bigger explosions I guess.

Hmm I was interested in seeing this, but the fact that it's being panned has my interest waning. I can't recall if I've ever seen the original, and I want to watch it, but I can't seem to find anyone that's selling the new release of the original Total Recall ("Mind Bending Edition"). Amazon and Best Buy both have it for less than $10, but it's sold out at both places (including locally for Best Buy). 🙁

At least according to blu-ray.com, the new release is far better than the original.

Eh it's not a straight remake, he doesn't go to Mars at all, none of that nonsense.

The Total Recall name really just refers to the memory/dream stuff inspired by the Phillip K Dick story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale". That idea/tech is the only thing really connecting the movies so another interpretation of that story isn't a bad thing necessarily.

Looks entertaining, will watch.

I actually find that disappointing, I was looking forward to a remake and I don't really like Dick's novels. I know he wrote what became BLaderunner though I never read that.

The one I read.. can't think of the name... man in the castle? It was about post WWII but the Japanes won and rule America, then at the end it's all a dream or whatever. I think his writing is too dated.

I saw this last night at a screening event. I was very anxious to see this movie with great high hopes. I was the Arnold Total Recall probably 20 times over the last 20 years. It was great. This movie sucked. Not going to spoil it, but the story line was poor at best, and it tried to rely on special effects and shooting and fighting. On a scale of 1 to 5 I gave it a 2, and I was being generous. Collin Ferrel just doens't have what Arnold had.

Watched it. There's no Mars colony in this one? This is significantly less-epic than the first (where the protagonists create an atmosphere and gain an entire PLANET for the colonists; defeating the guy that had oppressed them by controlling the air supply).

Regarding that thing that goes through the Earth:

The idea is to save energy because it basically falls half of the distance. If you're falling, you're weightless. This movie doesn't seem to understand that.

If there's a huge metropolis on both sides of the through-Earth transport thing, why do the "colonists" commute to work through the entire Earth instead of simply living on the side where they work?

Also:

Why wasn't the production of "synthetics" always automated?

Why do Cohagen and company not wear gas masks when they break into the building in the "No Zone?"

Why does Cohagen go with (and die with) the synthetic invasion force?

Why does Quaid/Hauser go unconscious after he leaps off the falling/exploding transport thing?

Also, these robotic enforcers ("synthetics") are clearly meant to keep the gore down to PG-13 levels. All the detached arms and torsos in this movie were clean-and-sterile robots that don't even spill any fluid.

Why don't they try remaking really bad movies and fixing them? say Battlefield earth. Who's gonna compare to Arnold and S. Stone in her prime...NO ONE that's who..

Maybe the next Judge Dredd will be just that? Probably not, though.

I saw Total Recall (2012). It is PG13 even though it a a small nude scene in it. The original was an 8 out of ten this is 7.5 out of 10. The nude scene is right at the beginning of the movie. I like the sound of the guns. There is not much of a story like the original. I wish they would have explained the world around them more. Kate Beckinsale is good and so is Biel. The male lead actor was perfect. It is one long chase movie. Eat candy instead of popcorn. I saw it in a VERY GOOD inner city theater. Clean as a whistle in the screening room

i thought the Arnold one was good enough and still is. I can see why they would want to reboot it though, but why stop there, might as well reboot the Matrix too while were at it.
