starship troopers is based on a book which is even more subversive

escape from NY and robocop are loosely based on earlier scifi stories

hollywood has never been original. in fact most performance based art has always copied someone for their material

I think in a lot of cases it’s just banking on a franchises that has already proven to be successful. Why risk millions on something different that may not work in the box office, then remake something that had a solid offering with newer, and in the case of SciFi much better effects? The odds of making profit (which I know is a sin according to a ton of threads here) on a movie that has a proven following is much higher.

The thing that annoys me is when they do not have the brains to make a Romeo and Juliet -> West Side Story. they have to name it the same thing and jazz it up with more sex, violence and special effects. (Damn that Romeo!).

It all started with the numerical sequels replacing individually named movies and has evolved into this.

full trailer is out now, I think it looks pretty good

Biel and Kate B? Can't be bad, can it?

Speaking of remakes and Kate Beckingsale, whatever happened to the Barbarella remake? She was going to be the star. I'd pay a dollar or so to see that.

Eh it's not a straight remake, he doesn't go to Mars at all, none of that nonsense.

The Total Recall name really just refers to the memory/dream stuff inspired by the Phillip K Dick story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale". That idea/tech is the only thing really connecting the movies so another interpretation of that story isn't a bad thing necessarily.

Looks entertaining, will watch.
I was a little iffy about the remake but you made a good point, it is (along with quite a few other movies) based off a PKD short story so I suppose it is open to interpretation. I was just assuming it would be a shitty remake for an excuse to add a shit load of CGI and pretty graphics, but this might be decent after all.

I'm going to boycott this movie simply because of the quicktime required trailer. For being such "leaders" in technology, Apple sure doesn't get that people don't want to fuck with their tired format.

That movie was already a "remake" of a book by Phillip K. Dick
So many movies based on this guys work that ppl dont realize. Like the best one: Blade Runner.
Major cyberpunk themes in all his work.

umm you can get VLC to play all the quicktime crap for you without installing quicktime

I just search for it on youtube.

That doesnt look too bad. Kinda digging the evil Kate Beckinsale. It'll probably be one of those movies where if you never saw the original you'd think it was a great movie. Just not as grand a movie without Mars, mutants, alien terraforming tech, midget and 3 boobed hookers.
