I recently sold a PC to someone I work with and they did a clean install of XP Home, everything was working fine. Now all of a sudden it won't do much when you turn it on, all it seems to do is beep once then nothing. I can't even get it into bios, I am lost.

specs:
1. 2.6 P4c
2. Nvidia 5900
3. noname 400w PSU
4. Soyo Dragon Plus II (anyone familiar with this board at all)

The person had everything working ok, then added a soundcard and DVD burner.

1. Turn the computer on and beeps once
2. Displays video card info on screen
3. Screen goes black
4. Screen then displays "insert bootable floppy"

PS.....WTF

probably reinstall xp. the install was faulty so likely the pc cant find the MBR(Master Boot Record).

is it 1 long beep, 1 short beep, or 1 continous beep?

did the person change boot order in the bios? and make it just boot from floppy and disabled the 2nd and 3rd boot options?

I second this. Especially if the PC has more than one HD.

When you add new stuff, the bios has a funny way of resetting the boot order for whatever reason.

If there's multiple hard drives, chances are it's trying to boot from one that doesn't have windows installed on it.

Regardless, I'd check the bios for other problems before reinstalling xp.

Hey here is the problem, I am not able to get into bios at all!!!!
I guess it does make sense that the boot order could have changed from adding the DVD drive, but I hardly see how that will keep me from getting into the bios.

There is only one HDD

the beep is the normal one short beep for the person that asked that.

One beep and nothing comes up on the monitor(your video card flashing bios verison dosent count i would think)
To resolve this issue:

1. The monitor is not plug in correctly. Please check the monitor cable and be sure it is connected firmly. If the problem still presist, please try another monitor.

2. The Bios settings may not be set correctly.
To correct this problem try turning the system on while holding down the "Insert" key on your keyboard. Once the system comes up, hit the "Del" key and select "Load Optimised Defaults", hit "Enter" then select "Y". Then choose Save and Exit.

Sonds like you don't have something inserted correctly. First, reseat all hardware as its higly possible he bumped something when installing the new items.
Reset CMOS and then hit the pwr button.

If that doesn't work, then try again with only 1 stick RAM and VC installed and see if that gets you into BIOS.

If you still can't get into the BIOS, he probably fried something on the MB when he was installing the new HW.

If all of what I said hasn't worked, my next step would be to take out everything except the HD, video card and RAM and boot it. If it works, I'd install other peripherals, one at a time, and see what happens.

If it doesn't boot with just the basics, then the problem is not software related - at least that is my diagnosis without seeing it in front of me.

Good luck.

If it worked before he added the new parts, then he needs to pay you. You sold him a working PC, so the deal is complete.

How can you be sure he didn't short the MB when he installed the SC/ DVD drive?

There is no real reason to think it just died. I'd say he owes you the money or a working PC.

Well I would agree, but he can always say that it might have been on the way out anyway and so that's why I wanted to get rid of it in the first place. That isn't true, but he could always try and pin that excuse on me.

Well, first try everything that's been mentioned and see if that works.

If it's still dead, then see what you can work out with him.

Hm...check all your IDE and floppy connections (remove all the cables and reconnect them)...it's possible that he knocked a connector loose from the mainboard, or that he mangled the drive and forced the connector on incorrectly. Also check your master/slave jumpers while you're at it, as it's also possible that this could be causging problems.

and you could call bull$h!t and pop him in the mouth too.. it was working when he received it, he tried to modify the hardware original (working!) configuration you sold him and he screwed something up. End of story.

Make sure youre using a PS/2 keyboard, not USB. In case the BIOS wound up disableing USB support. Then try DEL to get into the BIOS. I too think the boot order got screwed up. Once youre into the BIOS I think youll be OK.

If not then do like what was suggested above, remove the DVD, check cables. He probably has the jumpers set wrong.

This might seem silly, but did he REMOVE the floppy with the soundcrads drivers? ;)

I.e., tell him to check the floppy drive and make sure it's empty

For one thing, you said he added 2 new things, and you also mention that he has a noname PSU. It seems like the culprit here is this POS PSU you have..
