Downloading something from fileshack. UT update 85MB. Left my computer alone. Went back to it 30-60 minutes later and the DL manager was reporting that it wasn't downloading. So then I stopped it and clicked retry and now it won't come off of my desktop, even with a restart and most processes disabled. The iicon on my desktop looks like an DOS exe and it can't be deleted because it says something is freaking using it. The 85MB file has been supposedly downloading from last night if it is true that it's still downloading, but I don't think so because the DL manager doesn't have it listed. WTF. Then, I copied the file and now the copy does the same thing, which must mean that there is something wrong with the file and it's all firefox's fault.

GODDAMNIT!!

Ugh. Try logging in as a different Admin-class user account, who'll have a different desktop screen, and see if you can get rid of it that way. Create another Admin-class account if necessary.

If that fails, then try this routine I'm adapting from a trick I saw someone mention:

1) Start in Safe Mode

2) Start a command-prompt window and navigate to the desktop directory where the file is located

3) CTRL ALT DEL and stop the Explorer.exe process

4) Now try deleting the file in the command-prompt window

Worth a shot, anyway :)

Of course it is. You sound like all the users at work crying things like "My Outlook's broken, the network sucks!!!"

firefox was responsible for downloading the file, if it is messed up, then it's their fault.

"My Outlook's broken, the network sucks!!!"
That's just retarded.

Right, it's not like it could be Windows that left the file in an inconsistent state in the filesystem or explorer that has the file locked. Grab a copy of filemon and see what has it locked, I bet it's not firefox.

That's just retarded.

Exactly.

Well, it's never happened to me before, so I assumed.

1) Start in Safe Mode

2) Start a command-prompt window and navigate to the desktop directory where the file is located

3) CTRL ALT DEL and stop the Explorer.exe process

4) Now try deleting the file in the command-prompt window
This worked like a charm, thanks a lot.
