WITH ROUTER I have connection.
WITHOUT ROUTER, straight to modem, I have no connection.

I swtiched back and forth and it only works this way.

This has comcast CSRs absolutely baffled. I went through three and they're sending out a technitian tomorrow.

LAN cables and Ethernet cards are ruled out, they're perfectly fine as I've tested using spares.

Isn't this strange? Adding more equipment should make things worse, not the other way...

[edit] more info:
Yesterday, everything was working flawlessly in full 4mbits glory & 55~ ping. This morning everything got sluggish. Nothing was changed but my network started to get weird. There are no reported outages/problem in my area. Right now, everything loads as if I'm on dial-up and I cannot play games at all... Wayyy too laggy.

CSRs told me to connect directly to rule out the router. Without router I have absolutely no connection, With router I have connection but with crappy ass speed.

*scratches head*

When I'm directly connected to the modem? Nothing. It reports 0.0.0.0 for IP & Subnet Mask.

My ISP's service for my entire state is currently wonky, as the cable between here and Seattle apparently got damaged. I logged on to their site to see what the current status was, and their status page isn't working either. :p

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0130'

Invalid File attribute

/_pageContent/internet/network/index.asp, line 73

File attribute '/includes/MenuJSFiles.inc' cannot start with forward slash or back slash.

sounds like an IP issue...

make sure you have auto/auto set for your TCP/IP, before you do this, write down your IP config...in case you can't get internet with your router later on..

is your DHCP service disabled?

Does it to me too. I think it's cuz I'm manually configured though.

Today what was happening was that the signal would just drop out.

Make sure you turn off both the cable modem and the PC, connect them, then start them back up. I know it shouldn't make a difference but it did for mine.

Could be a MAC conflict. There's a chance your NIC and your cable modem have the same MAC address somehow. Try changing your MAC or using a different NIC in your PC when you direct connect it to your modem. Could also be that the signal coming off the ethernet interface on your modem is weak or something and your switch/router is cleaning it up somehow also. Are you sure you're not using a cross over cable from your modem to your PC? A switch/router would probably auto-cross the cable and never think twice about it. That should give you plenty to work on checking out.

disable your firewall temporarily if you have it enabled

Issues between network card & modem. Update firmwares and drivers.
Change network card - instead of auto detect, try setting to 100 full duplex.

Mac address clone ought to take care of it.

I'm guessing it's a MAC address issue too.

So what do I do if that may be the case?

First, confirm the MAC address of your NIC and your modem. The modems usually have a decal with the MAC on the outside of it somewhere. You can get the MAC of your NIC by doing a ipconfig /all (assuming your using Windows) from a command prompt. The MAC will be listed as Physical Address in the return data. If they are the same, one of them must change. There are tools out there to change your NIC MAC to something different, if your NIC supports such action, some don't.

Yeah, that hit us hard here in Valdez as well. We couldn't get a lot of long distance to connect, and my DSL has been out almost all day. Bleh.

I think once you connect your desktop, you need to have them reset your service on their end so they can accept the new hardware being connected. I've had the same issue in the past, where I could only connect thru my router, if I tried another router, I would get no connection, same with a direct PC connection.
