I ran over a mailbox with my first car (a toyota tercel, which is all plastic) when I blew a tire going way to fast in a residential neighberhood. Didn't do anything besides put 2 small white paint lines about 3.5 inches apart on my bumper (mailbox post was white) I sheared the post off right at the ground when I went back about a week later to look at it.

Whatever hit the mailbox, had a wheelbase of about 2 feet, and only had two wheels. the whole way through there is only 2 tracks of excactly the same size. even in the turns. freaky.

Motorcycle doing a powerslide?

I took a closer look with the handy zoom feature on the digital camera, it actually is four wheels. Just didn't see it at first. but it does have a wheelbase of about 2 feet.

Funny story about people smashing mailboxes -- this story is set about thirty-five years ago, before I was born...

My mother's boss had this same problem, only worse. She lived on a sharp corner and there were a buch of kids who thought it was hilarious to run down her mailbox...every time she'd replace it, a few weeks later, it'd get run down with a car again and demolished. Well, her friendship with my mom brought my grandfather into the picture. He was a metalworker who fabricated aircraft prototypes, and He decided to solve the problem *permanently*. You can probably see where this is going.

He got a Large guage steel pipe, welded a door on the front and sealed the back, then he welded the 'box' to a steel pipe acting as a pole. The 'pole' had been sunk ~6ft into the ground with a large concrete base, and filled with concrete itslef.

Approxximately a week later, this woman heard a resounding *CRASH* as a car wrapped itself around the mailbox, pretty much destroying the front end. She went out to check the damage the next morining, the car had been pulled away by one of their friends and to this day, that mailbox stands there, having been bent a whopping 20 degrees. Nobody ever tried to run that thing down again.

A go cart has a wheelbase of > 3 feet. Nothing that is road legal has a wheelbase of 24 inches. May I suggest a handy dandy tape measure when it gets light out :)

They probably ran off the road in the storm. That or they were drunk. Probably both.

That's what you get for not including pics.

It's on the other side of the country, in a place that I haven't been for at least 8 years...I'd need a pretty sweet lens...
