I just got a 16x Toshiba DVD shipped for $64.
No DVD software. No audio cable, nada. Well, I have some audio cables laying around. I wonder where I can ge some DVD software?

Look, if you are going the cheapest route then you go OEM (bare drive). But if you want ALL the software and cables, you go RETAIL, but it will cost you more because guess what? You're paying for the software and ALL the other stuff that comes bundled with it! Don't bitch when it says "BARE DRIVE" and that is all you get, because that is ALL YOU PAID FOR!

I was referring to how DVD software decoders are not free.

I know I bought my drive Bare and I'm cool with that. You obviously didn't comprehend the point of my topic.

Stop being rude and take some English classes please.

Dude, I'm not being rude. It just blows my mind that you would even think that! Why would it be free? It took software designers to create it and add new features with every new version. Do you think this is charity work they are doing? If it is such "simple" software, I suggest you bust out your programming skills and create your own.

No I'm not. I'm not one of these guys that go off on people that crack or use warez to get their software. I really don't care. I'm just amazed that someone would EXPECT to not be charged for software. I mean, what the hell kind of sense is that? That's like saying, "I built my own system and someone told me that Windows2000 would be free. Well come to find out MS wants $200+ for it! What kind of crap is that? How is my hardware supposed to work without an OS?"

Jack,
To the uniformed it does seem like there should be a bunch of free DVD decoding software running around.
What makes me laugh is if Microsoft included a good DVD decoder in Windows whatever...they would still say Bill Gates is "suck".
Actually I'm surprised he hasn't bundled one for free...
WMP doesn't do it?

I don't see how you haven't got at least one of these things yet. I got ATi's player w/ my radeon, I got PowerDVD w/ my DVD drive, SoftDVD with a sound card (MX300), and Xing with a video card of mine. If you bought all the components to your machine you should have gotten at least 1 OEM decoder . . .

All you dumbasses don't even get the point of why there is no free DVD software.

TO LEGALLY USE THE DESCRAMBLING CODE YOU HAVE TO PAY A LICENSE FEE. WHEN YOU HAVE TO PAY A FEE TO A THIRD PARTY THAT MAKES IT HARD TO GIVE AWAY YOUR SOFTWARE FOR FREE.

But if you want to donate the $5 license fee, or pay hefty civil penalties, or do jail time for every copy of a player you give away, go right ahead.

Many DVD's include PCFriendly software. It's a decent DVD player and is included in the cost of the DVD.

One of those threads that makes me laugh..

"I bought a bare drive. Where the hell is my software & stuff!??!"

C'mon :D

..and you can get PowerDVD for less than ten bucks - that IS free software.
