WTF? Smart Media Cards come in DIFF SPEEDS?

What the crap? I didnt know that. Some dude at fry's told me there are two different speeds right now, 2x and 8x. So they had a 128mb card in their ad today that was only a 2x - so he says.

Anyone familiar with this? And when used in a digital camera, is it gonna be a noticeable/annoying speed difference? I went ahead and bought an 8x - for significantly more. I have 15 days to return it tho. What do you guys think?

try buying botht he 2x and the 8x. and use both for the 14 days, and return the one you think is the best one for your price...

hrrrm good idea....I dont have all that much loot tho.

128mb 2x = 39.99
64mb 8x = $45.00

I bought the 8x for now. Maybe I ought to do some web searching for a better price on an 8x, eh?

Ahh!!!

I bought a 128 mb cf card from frys and it didnt work in my nikon coolpix 775! And i wasn't able to return it after 10 days...

BTW its a bsa media one.

I bought the SANDISK 64mb card. The camera Im getting only comes with a 16mb card which will hold like 3 tiff or 16 jpgs..lol WHATTA BEAST! Cool just found a USB reader on newegg for $14.00

I think you should have gotten the bigger card that was less expensive. I am not aware of any major differences between read/write speed of SM.

i'd love to know if this is true too, probably not i bet😛 i've had experience dealing with frys sales. i'm too nice to point out the fact that everything they've just told me is bs, it s sad😛 i just point out what i want and they probably think i'm the idiot🙂 hah

I hear that, usually theyve all got a stick - or stump for that matter - up their asses. I have dealt with this same guy on many occassions tho, seems knowledgeable and hasnt done me wrong yet - so I'll take his word for it. Anyone else got any info for me?

btw - I am thinkin about getting the larger, slower card. I dont mind waiting an extra second between pictures.

The different speeds DO make a bit of a difference, but for most users it would never matter. A professional photojournalist, taking a lot of shots in rapid succession and routinely transfering very large numbers of files, will benefit from the added speed, but those of us who just take the occasional snapshot will not care.

As i understand it, the HOST controls SM speeds. CF is partially both since it has an onboard controller.. and if the camera takes advantage of it, then it makes a hell of a difference for some ppl.
