I tried to rma my sapphire video card, and they sent me an email saying to deal with a third party (athlonmicro) for the rma. that alone is pretty strange, but looking around onine, it seems that they have a deal with athlonmicro to handle all us and canada support.

So I emailed athlonmicro and they want $$ to rma the card. WTF. i'm fine iwth paying shipping to them (equivalent to driving to a store to return something), but to charge me moeny for return shipping? that's outrageous. and not only that, they screwd up the amount. onteh email, they simply state:
There will be a US$15 dollar processing fee (Which takes care of the repacking and insurance of your return product) for this RMA service, so please include a US$15 money order (if Canadian customer (US$30) Yukon Northwest Territory, Brazil and Argentina customers will be (US$50) must provide money order or cashier?s check) or personal check so we can process the RMA request for you.

Notice that there is nothing specific written about AK or HI. Inside the RMA form from them, it states:

Recieving Memo:

$15.00 FOR 49 STATES

$35.00 FOR HI, AK

$30.00 OR $50.00 FOR CANADA.(MONEY ORDER ONLY)

Not only do they give different prices, but they don't eve have the locations straight. Assuming that they are using "49 states" and "HI, AK" exclusively, we have 51 states. Obviously they are wrong. And by "49 states", what do they mean?

I paid for a warranty already dammit, not to have my support outsourced to some company that is just trying to take my money. Fvck sapphire, I'll go with other companies next time.

49 states = 48 states + DC. DC is not a state, but most people would figure it out.

Sucks that they charge for the RMA though... that's strange. Edit: Wait, this is an extended warranty? Then it's not so strange. Read the warranty.

Not that this is really related, but my homeowner's warranty screwed me in a similar way. A couple of months after moving in, our dishwasher started leaking water all over the kitchen floor. We contacted the warranty people, and they sent a 3rd party repair guy. The repair guy came and saw the issue, but then stated that the dishwasher was installed incorrectly and may not be covered under the homeowner's warranty as a result. Service fee: $50. The warranty company then confirmed that they were now excluding the dishwasher.

So...What did we get for our $50? Some asshat came, shined a flashlight under the unit, wrote up some paperwork, then left.

My homeowner's warranty was worthless.

I was under the impression that incorrect/improper installations is often not covered by homeowners insurance.

I was under the impression that incorrect/improper installations is often not covered by homeowners insurance.

I didn't install it incorrectly, though. And the only thing installed "incorrectly" was that the unit was installed with straight pipe to the dishwasher instead of using a flex hose on it. (in other words, water pipe was connected directly to intake of dishwasher instead of connecting to a flex hose. To remove the device, the pipe had to be completely disconnected because it had no way to pull out.)

Regardless, the part that broke was inside the dishwasher itself--some main unit near the motor began leaking water out--the part was not really a "replaceable" part as the labor/cost involved made it cost-prohibitive.

Besides, they excluded it AFTER I was out $50 for a service call.

The 3rd party warranty & support from Sapphire is nothing new & unfortuately neither is the $15 fee ... might explain why Sapphire cards are so cheap all the time, saves a lot of money for the company by not providing their own support... bad news is that unless you can persuade the retailer who sold you the card to do somthing for you instead, they have by the short hairs!
