The fine was only 50 bucks total and they charged the credit card that was used at the car rental place.

Most people break -some- law every day, especially traffic violations.

Do most people deserve tickets, every day?

Or better yet, if it was possible, should every infraction of the law (again, especially traffic violations) be punished 100% of the time?

BTW, we're extremely close to being able to make this happen.

So, basically you are guilty until proven innocent. You sure the ticket wasn't from Russia?

Make them serve you the ticket, don't pay the fine.

This. Until properly served to you, the ticket is not valid.

It's the law in Arizona.

That was one of the stipulations required before the cameras were allowed in the state.

Also dispute the charge on your credit card.

Make them send the guy from Pineapple express to serve it to you.

Last I checked, unless they're served by a law enforcement officer, they're not valid. YMMV.

I got flashed by one when I was going 61-63mph in a 65 zone. Go figure. Never received a ticket, though.

This is the law in CA. I guess I've heard plenty of speed cameras before, but this is probably why I'm not familiar with them. We only have red light cams here, and while I triggered one once, I never got a ticket.

Sounds like the stupid red light cams around here. Stop at the line. Stupid thing flashes. They seem to take pictures of the people turning left across the intersection, people driving by in cross traffic etc. Stupid when you have to go in and refute a ticket in traffic court where even the stupid ticket they mail you shows 3 pictures of your car sitting at the (behind) line but the machine says you blew the light at 30 mph, 45 seconds in to the red...

Yup. I used to live at a corner with the cams. Could see it from my window. flash flash flash. When I crossed the street it would flash. It would always flash if cars were stuck in the middle of the intersection (not stuck but clearing it as the light turned red). I always thought the rule was you have to cross the front white line and you're not running a red technically (although you could still get fined for blocking an intersection). However this is a dense urban area, and anyone who's driven in SF knows how it is. You cross as the light turns yellow, and when it turns red, you'll be in the intersection for a second or two as traffic slowly inches up. By the time cross traffic gets to go, you should be clear. Well the camera fired everytime someone was clearing the intersection even though they were in well before the red. Pretty annoying considering this is typical urban driving. I'm guessing no one got a ticket cuz I didn't.

no way that flies, talk to the cc company. I'm against stupid lawsuits but talk to a lawyer.

I wonder how that works... i mean usually CCs have fraud protection. While you can stop payment on almost anything, usually it has to be because of a fraudulent reason I thought.

They even have speeding cameras there in the middle of the desert on the interstate towards Nevada.

My friend set one off while we were driving to Vegas. Its stupid especially since there was probably no one +/- 4 miles from us in either direction.

He never got a ticket in the mail though.

Like others have said, you have to be served by a process server for it to be valid. Never heard of them being able to just charge your CC before.

Also, these things are set to trigger when going OVER 11mph of the speed limit unless in a school zone.

Meh, never had a speeding ticket. Just don't speed, it's really not that difficult, I've been able to get through my life without a ticket. Why people whine and complain about traffic violations is beyond me; if you can't read or follow the signs, maybe you shouldn't be on the road, or if you happen to make a mistake, which do of course happen, then just pay the god damned fine.

As a resident of Nevada I have to wonder if they ever even have those camera's on. At least in Reno, nobody here even drives 65 (the limit) half of them putz around at 55 on the highway so there is no need for Cameras.

Also I've gone through a few lights that were red (changed just as I got there) with visible cameras and never seen a ticket.

Also the speed cameras are kind of ridiculous, if you are on a highway in the middle of the desert that is straight and flat for the next 50+ miles with damn near nobody on it, speeding a little is not a big deal.

That's like, umpteen million kinds of bullshit

1. The municipality likely coerced the rental co. into supplying them with your CC info, which is probably illegal in at least a dozen ways, surely breaking tons of sorts of privacy acts and whatnot

2. The rental co. complied

3. Guilty til proven innocent etc.

4. Sounds similar in theory to garnishing wages, which in and of itself is another million kinds of bullshit

5. Traffic cameras in general are bullshit

insert umpteen million kind of bullshit here

Sounds like the car rental place was served since the photo radar doesn't know who was driving. The car rental paid the fine, and charged the person who was in possession of the car at the time of the ticket.

Whoa whoa whoa... wait a sec (to everyone else). Everyone is saying the tickets aren't valid, he was illegally billed, etc.

Has nobody stopped to think that maybe the RENTAL company was validly served, and as part of the rental contract incidental charges (such as these tickets) will be billed to the renter? Perhaps the rental company simply forwarded the tickets to the OP to explain why he was incidentally billed for the tickets.

That said, the OP's gripe is about TWO tickets in a limited timeframe, not the fact that he got the tickets in the first place.

Edit: Well apparently dawks has. :p

Was it a charge from the rental company which they may have the right to do in their contract for getting a ticket in their vehicle. The $50 seems like a well rounded number. If it is from the rental car company, then I would just deal with that. If that is all you have gotten so far, I would shred the tickets, you never got them unless they were sent registered mail which I have yet to see them sent that way.

If the speed-light company charged you I would contest the charge with the cc company as an unauthorized transaction and continue to deny receiving a ticket until a cop physically comes to your house to hand you one.

Ahh.. These threads always inspire the self righteous to come out in droves. Like they've never gone over the speed limit.

It's not about never going over the limit, it's about accepting the risk that if you do speed you might get a ticket. Pay the fine, get on with life.
