WTF? Pete "I'm banned for life" Rose coming back to baseball

JEDI

Lifer
CNN

He was banned for life for betting on baseball games, including the team he was managing.

I think this sends a bad msg to people, mainly do something bad (white collar crime) and you can think of the penalties as empty threats.

What do u think?

Being black doesn't hurt either

If Pete murdered someone, or did drugs, or sold drugs, or molested sheep, it doesn't matter because those things have nothing to do with baseball. However, he DID bet on baseball, and for that he should be banned from baseball for life. Baseball has had that rule for 80 years because the 1919 Black Sox scandal almost ruined baseball permanently.

Being banned from baseball for life doesn't mean Pete can't get a job, or have a place to live, or support his family. He broke the number-one rule related to baseball and for that he should remain banned forever. No exceptions, no forgiveness, no "I'm sorry".

You cannot be soft on that rule, or the gamblers will infiltrate the game and you'll never know who's playing hard and who's dogging it because of a bet. At that point, the game will be meaningless.

Actually I think it does. Statistics shows that black offenders in violent crimes are likelier to be convicted than whites, and tend to serve harsher sentences, especially where the death penalty is involved. I don't think the OJ Simpson case is illustrative of how race relations tend to play out in the courtroom - he was the most famous, most beloved black man in America in the height of his fame.

The guy still doesn't think he did anything wrong.... He's a self involved ass who deserved his sentence and should suck it up.

And wondering who's on 'roids and other performance drugs vs who's not, that doesn't matter. I mean it's all about the game not who wins or loses or who's playing hardest or who's cheating. Oh wait, they're going to start testing now...

I'm a baseball fan, but, I don't take it seriously. It's mostly just a home run show thesedays.

Pete Rose was one of the best players in the game. His ban for life from baseball has removed him from inclusion in the Baseball Hall of Fame. He does have gambling problems, but OUTSIDE problems should not impact what he has done for baseball. I for one will be glad his "ban for life" is being lifted. he will probably be one of the few people inducted into the hall on his first ballot.

I think he's referring to rich black men versus poor black men..

😉

bout time.

There is no way that the all time hit leader should be banned from baseball.

He had a gambling problem, so does Jordan....whoop tee doo. He'd been better off killing someone as they seem to get slaps on the wrist.

If MLB really had any moral authority, I might be willing to say that Rose should NOT be re-instated. BUT MLB, like most professional sports, is ripe with drugs, violence, and a economic system which basically garuantees success can be bought.

MLB uses Rose as evidence that Baseball is good and fair.

Is Pro Baseball even considered a sport anymore? I consider it more like Pro wrestling sports entertainment. All the players and owners are worried about is their wallets. If I want to see baseball I?ll go watch my 10-year-old nephew at least it?s still a game to him.

First off, I love Charlie Hustle... He was my favorite player of the time, maybe of all time.

But the problem that I have is that HE SIGNED AN AGREEMENT to be banned for life. So, to say that "he should not have been banned from baseball for life" is invalid, since he seemed to think so at the time.

I mean... Signing your name, giving your word, and making a committment seems to mean less and less every day. 🙁

I'm not sure why being the all-time hit leader should exempt him from the rules. That's silly.

Bah... the only reason this is an issue is because he's the all-time hit leader... the same argument would happen if Barry Bonds was caught betting on baseball, or is Rickey Henderson got nailed for it... If it was someone like Ken Huckaby (catcher for the Jays) then it would be news for all of 5 minutes... but because it's Charlie Hustle.. we have to frag this crap on and on and on..

i agree w/you 100%, except the part where you say it WILL be meaningless. you mean it's not already?

Was it ever proven that he bet against his own team?

Doesn't matter. He bet on his own team - sometimes.

Let's say you are the bookie who takes Pete's $10,000 bets. Five days in a row he bets on his own team. The next day he doesn't bet. That's all you need to know.

He bet on baseball and on teams he was involved with at the time. He was banned for life and it should stay that way. What, the rules change if it was a popular player who broke them. He brought the integrity of the game into question and he got the punishment he deserved. It's amazing so many people will defend him and want him back... :|
