WTF, Nero? Is there anything else that replaces it?

Hi folks,

I've just realized that I need to install a DVD burning program on my machine, and the old Nero I have is not compatible with Windows 7 64-bit.

I looked at the newer Nero version, and I'm totally put off by the fact that it's become huge and bloated... Encoding, transcoding, menu creation... WTF? I only need a reliable burner, nothing else.

I already have IMGBurn, and I use it in a crisis, but I was really comfortable with the old Nero interface. I liked the fact that it gave me control over the way I record the discs...

Is there currently any version of Nero that is bloat-free AND works reliably on Win7 x64? I'm NOT talking about Nero Express, because it doesn't have as many fine-tuning options.

Failing that, is there another program that would give me the same flexibility/options, in a similar interface?

Thanks much!

Try ImgBurn, it is quite good in burning job. Its tiny, light and more importantly it free. Threw Nero into trash about a year ago, its for someone who want to do more than route CD & DVD things.

Have used most of the above and they are all good. Haven't used Nero in years and don't miss it.

I've used both CDBurnerXP and Imgburn.

They both work great for what they are.

But what do you use when you no kidding have a few videos on your camera that you would like to turn in to a standard single layer DVD with a menu for the parents, grandparents, etc?

It doesn't seem so easy then...

Nero used to be great for this...

Sadly, I agree. Nero USED to be awesome (talking Nero 6 and somewhat nero 7). After those versions though, it got absolutely terrible. Shame 🙁.

Nero 7 micro? 😛 I just use it for burning audio cds.

Everything else imgburn

I've been wondering about that... I still can't figure out if a) all the "micro", "lite" (and so on) versions are legit or simply warez'd/gimped by other programmers/hackers and b) whether these are really Win7 x64 compatible.

And since this is a new build that I'm rather proud of, I REALLY don't want to get trojans/virii on it....

It might seem obvious but Windows DVD Maker is actually perfect for just that. If your running Win7 and don't see it in your Programs.

Control Panel/ Programs and Features / Turn Windows features On
Select Media put a check on DVD Maker wait 10 seconds make your DVD's

That, or ConvertXtoDVD....

But this is derailing the thread... I need a burner, not a transcoder. I don't want an all-in-one program suite. I like programs that do a single thing, and do it well. Nero used to be a good CD/DVD burner, and that was all I needed it to do... sigh...

If you want a not too costly paid program, try UltraISO ... not bad and for the price $29.95 & you get lifetime updates to new versions. If you want free, stick with Imgburn .. also keep an eye out on Giveawayoftheday.com .. http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ ... They at times, offer Ashampoo as a freebie. Only thing is you must install it on the same day as the download and you can not update it with the key (or reinstall it at a later date, but there are some workarounds for that)

The "lite" and "micro" versions are hacked versions that have all of the bloat removed. They're clean assuming you get it directly from the here. The problem for you is your old Nero wouldn't work on Win7. The lite and micro versions still require a legitimate serial in order to work. Example, if you had Nero 8 but didn't want the bloat, you could find a copy of the lite or micro version of Nero 8 but to legally use it, you'd still be required to own Nero 8 and have a valid serial.

I use Ashampoo Burning Studio 11 and I love it!

It is what Nero was a few years back without the bloat, it can convert any video file for you on the fly to create a DVD or Video CD and easily allow you to make Audio CDs or MP3 CDs or burn images

I suggest ImgBurn, does what you need it to do.

Also if you have just installed Windows ninite is super useful. It will install all of your desired applications including things like ImgBurn, Infrarecorder, Security Essentials, Notepad++, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, 7Zip etc..

another for Imgburn. I also use foobar2000 + audio CD burning plugin to make mix CDs for the car. That's about all I need since recording data CDs and DVDs is completely irrelevant thanks to USB drives..
