WTF my DVD burner just fried a disc

Burned something. Tried to read the disc.. failed.

Ejected it (no way could there be scratches on a brand new disc right? but maybe)

WOW It's TOASTED

Left: A disc I took off the spindle
Right: Just burned =P

WTF is this?!?!?!

Should I be worried? I'll burn another disc and see what happens. I have a NEC 3540 btw.

I've never seen that happen before! 😕

Try burning another one DLeRium 🙂

I'm no hardware expert, but if DVD-r's work by making binary impressions on a laser alterable strata and if the laser burns all 0's (let's say) for the whole disc and zero equals a burn mark, then the whole disc gets burnt... Kind of a low level format for CD media...

I'd be worried if the fried disc was of a type I knew worked fine in my burner before. 🙁

EDIT After looking at pics: WTF? 😕

nope that's not true. I'm not an expert, but from what I heard, the date is stored in the transitions between the burn mark and the nonburned area. There are limits on the lenth of the burn marks too. There's no way to burn a continuous burn mark on a disk unless there is a problem with the burner or it's a special burner. And if a continuous burn mark was made then the disk would be unreadable because it violated the format for the data.

Good thing I post in OT instead of any of the technical forums... 😀

detach the laser from the drive and install it on a shark...thus making them....sharks...with laser beams attached to their heads....and then take over the world

kind of like the dolphin and octopus in Red Alert 2. damned communist octopi.

Do a couple more burns, and if it doesn't happen again I'd call the problem a bad disc and leave it at that.

I've got one better than that, but no picture (might still have the disc, I'll check later). I burned a copy of Troy from a rental just to see if I could. Well, the burn process didn't go perfectly, and the playback stuttered occasionally (paused), for lack of a better term. I tried watching it in my DVD player on my home theater (Sony 400 disc changer), and the player literally melted the disc! Seriously, there's a groove on the DVD that wasn't there previously.

I haven't tried it subsequently, but I was fairly shocked at the result. Not sure how it happened.

Yuri!!!!!

Well if it let me burn for 8 min straight on 8x mode with the disc upside down that's gotta be whacked. Plus it detected it as a DVD-R and showed me 4.7 GB max capacity as opposed to the full capacity of a DVD-9 disc whcih I had in there before.

Anyone ever see some thing like this? Bleh willf ind out by tomorrow morning if its bad or not when I prepare something else to burn.

Um, did you have the disk in right side up 😛

the laser will burn through the plastic covering if it's upside down.

I would assume that since it was playing, it was right side up. It also has a "label" side with the markings on it so I didn't screw that up!
