WTF? Mechanic went shopping in my car

As mentioned here I got a new engine for my Explorer. Car runs finely now, some $6000+ later, but as I was driving home I noticed that it smelled like fast food or something. I think nothing of it, concentrate on varying my speeds for the break-in, and go inside.

I get a call then from him then saying that he accidentally left some bread in the back of my car. I'm like..uh bread?... okay..you can come by and pick it up if you want?

He agrees and is about to head over.

I go out to my car then, and sure enough, in the backseat there's about 10 loaves of french bread--full loaves, about 2 ft in length in the back, just sitting there in plastic bags.

Now I understand you have to drive it around and test the new engine (13 miles were put on it according to the odometer), but how ethical is this exactly? 😕

It's not terribly uncommon for people to run errands while test driving. There was a big issue over at BMW because a mechanic took a brand new M3 to Tim Hortons and the owner to be recognized it (custom color) and almost didn't buy it.

No link, got it from the source.

Well, I imagine they have to drive it to make sure everything is alright... if you had to do that, would you rather just drive around aimlessly or get stuff done?

In Washington D.C. the parking garages are really shady. I know someone who usually parks in one of those all-day parking garages to go to work. A week later, he recieves a red light ticket at the time he was working in his office. It turns out someone that works in the parking garage decided to take a drive in his car, and run a red light. I told him to take legal action, but he doesn't have time or the will power to do anything. He spoke with the manager of the parking garage, but the manager ignored him. This kind of shady business upsets me dearly. You should confront the mechanic about your situation.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's pretty common for mechanics to do that especially if they're a smaller operation.

As long as they didn't mess it I see no problem. I hate it when they have to drive my car, but when they do I'd rather have them buying grocery's than street racing and getting caught with cocaine under the seat and having the car impounded as evidence (I think a BMW salesman, article here recently).

So you have no problem with them doing something unethical since it's not as bad as doing something worse?

That's like saying "Yeah I don't really mind getting punched in the face. It's better than getting shot!"

Umm you have another choice - not to get punched (or in this case, have your car driven around for fun)

It wasn't driven around for fun you dramatic r-tard. He took it on a drive to test out the engine. There is a big difference. Pretending like you are using the car for what the owner will use it for seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do, and especially since the guy needed to buy groceries, I don't really see the problem. I would have preferred if he asked me first before he did that to my car, but I definitely wouldn't care. It makes perfect sense.

People are people... I do careless/selfish stuff at work on occasion. Not saying where I work but can definitely mean a bad day for someone but a minor "oh hehe thats silly" to others.

I'd be glad he took the time to test your shit out thoroughly. A drive thru is a bad time to find out that the brakes don't work and the accelerator sticks, if you know what I mean. So he picked up some bread along the way. So what are ya gonna do? Trash the guy's career, demand a refund for his bread...whatcha gonna do?

Get over it, would be my stance. 🙂

QFT!
If I were to replace an engine for someone, I would want to thoroughly check it out before letting them have it back!
By thorough, I mean running it up to operating temps & cooling back down a few times, road tests under normal conditions (Such as stopping at a store, shutting it off, & making sure it re-starts properly), High speed driving, stop & go driving, etc.
Any real mechanic worth his salt would want to do the same.
I'm sure he stopped at a store while he was test driving it (though stopping at a store may or may not be a part of his normal routine, at least he did do SOME testing).

That's about as odd as someone...not noticing 10 loaves of french bread in the back seat!

Ditto, how do you not notice 10 loaves of bread in your car? 😕

One time I walked my dog over to pick my car up from Goodyear. I had grabbed a spare set of keys so I put my dog in back seat of the car (rolled the windows down) and then went in to pay. I asked the guy at the front desk who in the heck put a dog in my car!! You should have seen the look on his face when he looked up and saw my big Samoyed sitting in the car staring at him

He was pretty relieved when I told him it was me. 😀

Truth is that if I didn't combine running errands with the test drives I do at work I would hardly get anything done at all some days. There have been several times where I have used a customers car to pick up parts, go to lunch when I can find time, or even stop off for a quick personal errand on rare occasions. Its just maximizing the use of the time you have to get more done.
