in my experience, no. my friends and i always put eachother down for references, and none of us have ever been called. most recently, my roomate put me down as his latest WORK reference and i never got called, and he was hired.

Lots of people do not even bother with refrences anymore. Lots companies even have policies where you are not allowd to give a reference. Appearently, peopel get pissed off when their job does not give positive reviews and then they sue.

Company I worked for checked all my preferences. One of my references retired and they asked that I tracked him down at home to talk to him, woudn't let me give another as substitute. The reference played a role in my hiring so I wouldn't just put anyone down. Make sure whomever you put down will give you positive feedback and give them a heads up as a courtesy.
