The dude stole priceless national treasury as an official. It's not like he was stealing food for survial, he stole it for a fat profit. So you say the Chinese government is too corrupt, now they put the clamp down, now you say they are too strict?

Stealing priceless national treasury and selling for a big fat profit deserve death, I don't give a sh!t if you are just stealing, becuase when u do that, you are selling your country's history and heritage to the buyers. To me thats the same thing as stabbing your own country in the back.

I guess I value human life a bit more than most others in this thread.

human life is cheap in china

Obviously. They're killing people for stealing stuff.

But it's just not any stuff, it's priceless treasures. If the stuff he was stealing wasn't one of a kind, then it would be kind of harsh to kill him.

Why does it matter? It's only stuff, maybe it's worth alot, but it's just STUFF! It's not life or anything close to it.

Another stupid death penalty opponent. I would sentence that guy to death twice.

I'm all for the death penalty actually. Just not for stealing.

Of course not for stealing. The guys is not stealing YOUR priceless artifacts. you have nothing to do with his action, feel nothing of the loss.

the chinese gov takes culture relics very seriously

Sure they do! Two words for you: Cultural Revolution. (of course their attitude towards 'the great olds' has changed, but it wasn't always like this. Nationalism can do wonders for archeology and the arts!)

I remember reading about a far more disturbing case a year or two ago, an elderly man, real old, took his son's tractor or van to a gas station to get gas, and ended up talking with others there for awhile. He later drove off, forgetting to pay and was chased by someone on foot and made to stop. Charged with gasoline theft and got a bullet to the head. Can't imagine why Taiwan wants nothing to do with Beijing!!!

meh that was a crazy time. just because the current government is also "communist" that doesn't mean they go around sending suspected capitalists to re-education anymore

Like I said before, it wouldn't be less crime, it would just be the LAW committing more crime.

Taiwan media is filled with NOTHING but horror stories about mainland for decades. They capture every little crimes and ills that happen on mainland and then generalize them. Sh1t and crimes happen anywhere. But when you only report what you choose to, that is called propoganda.

Maybe, but every single news source in the world has an agenda and only reports what it chooses too.

It's difficult to see their point of view here. The oldest relics we have in this country important to national heritage is max 3-400 years old. The Chinese have stuff that's 4700 years old dating back to the Shang Dynasties. Also being listed by UNESCO means they are world protected treasures. He knew what he was doing and the price of being caught and still did it. Well fate's a Biatch ain't it?
I don't care if the guy stole the crown jewels off the queens head, he doesn't deserve to die for stealing stuff. At least in Saudi Arabia they'd just slice his arms off.

Yes he does, a thief is one of the lowest forms of life. Deterrents don't work. Throw a thief in prison for his crime and when he gets out he will go right back to thieving except for a very small proportion who lead a legitimate life after prison but the juducial system rarely punishes most criminals. What do we as a society do? Accept the thieves? I say not....you steal and get caught you die. Crime rates would plummet if the death penalty was mandatory for more crimes but sadly the pansy liberals want to give everything away so it will never happen. At least in Texas we can use deadly force to protect our property and lives so if you break in to my house between my dogs and guns it is more than likely a death sentence. If I'm the one who falls at least I died standing for something instead of being a useless pansy.

I'm far from a pansy liberal. But I do value life more than possesions. You say the crime rate would plummet, I say the crime rate would skyrocket. The difference is only in who's committing the crimes. Death for stealing is a crime too.

suppose someone did something like blowing up the statue of liberty and no one got hurt

i'm sure they would probably get the death penalty for treason here or at the very least life in prison

these treasures are just as valuable if not more to the chinese people

Yes, yes it will.

Hey, the Chinese are nicer than some other Asian governments. A couple of them would have killed his family, his parents, his neighbors, and his dog too.

And to add on, the U.S. is going after an entire country (Iraq) for a couple of terrorists for the bombing of the World Trade Center.

Actaully most crimes in China do not carry death sentence. Usually only murdur, rape, big economical crime (like steal millions), endangering national security (like serious esponage) get death. Seems like you know nothing about world affairs.

Agreed. Unfortunetly the story I provided earlier wasn't propaganda. The mainland is no stranger to this practice either I'm afraid. I had a professor in college show my class examples of the horror stories Beijing tries to sell about America. One article was about a Chinese who emigrated to the US and was sealed up in a concrete support by his coworkers in a construction firm - because he was Chinese. The other one I remember was that a Chinese man was forced to donate his eyeballs so he could admit his child to an American hospital. Hilarious stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't drug trafficking and peddling pornography also offenses punished by death in China? I seem to recall hearing this from more than one source...

Drug trafficking is (when above some limit). Selling pornography is not.

Taiwan propoganda about mainland is far worse than Beijing proganda about the US perhaps that is because many Chinese have visited or lived in the US in the past 2 decades. I suggest that if you have never been to mainland, you should STFU.
