I just bought a lite on 48x24x48x16 cd burner dvd rom When I ever burn a cd using nero express it takes like 10mins to burn at 48x and the recorder buffer level jumps a lot.

First, make sure your drive is set to be a Master on your second IDE channel. Then, get the latest BIOS flash for your drive from Lite-On's download page. Better yet, if your 48x24x48 drive is an LTR-48246S, get the BIOS for LTR-52246S (52X 24X 52X). I've flashed at least a half dozen of these to 52x with no problems.

Also, make sure you have the latest update on your Nero 5.5.

Hope that helps. :)

Is it DMA enabled?
Have you tried different media?
Have you tried different formats? (Audio, Data, VCD, etc...)
Have you tried a straight CD Copy vs creating a Data or other CD type from info on your HD?
Have you tried burning at a specific speed that not max foryour device (ie: 32, 36, 40, 42)

Lite-On is a crappy cheap company. i had a Lite-On CD-RW for 3 months then it died on me. Then i bought a Sony and after a year its dying on me too. The next company i'm getting is samsung.

When I setup my new lite-on 52x I needed to disable Smart-Burn in Nero. With it on the burner will only write at 32x. This might be your problem.

Whatcha been smokin, sonny? You're at odds with almost everyone I know, including me, who thinks Lite-Ons are probably the best burner going. So far, I'm at about 10 of them for myself and friends, and I've successfully flashed 40x112x40's to 48x12x48 and 48x24x48's to 52x24x52 with no failures or bad results.

i don't know about express but nero (the regular one) has a switch under misc. tab that allows caching. i have a slow system and that saves a lot of time. do upgrade to latest firmware, etc. it will help some things also. express may have a similar switch.

Yep! And they're better burners after you replace the Sony firmware with Lite-On. Then, they'll do Mt. Rainier and other stuff Sony leaves out, and they'll work with the Nero bundled with Lite-On's. :)

Lite-on Burners are very reliable for the price. You get a lot without paying a lot... I've had mine for damn near a year... ripped more than 600 cd's by now, and burned at least 1000...

still going strong :)

That's totally false. Possibly a bad experience but definitely not a bad company...

I have owned 2 Lite-On's and built several systems inculding Lite on...

Never have i had a problem or failure.

400+ Burns.

$45 bucs for a 48x.

Can't beat it.

yes they are great burners etc. i have a 52 and a 48 in the machine and a forty that isn't only because there's no room or need at present. i also have the dvd. all w/o problems. they are great, and considering the price i'll never look at any other brand. i'm a cheapskate and so i'm still waiting for prices to drop on the dvd burners. i bought a yamaha 8x4x16x for 250 dollars and learned with it. but i won't pay that much unless i have more need than i have.

all the suggestions are good ones. i remember that with easy cd creator (yes i was guilty) i had to spend a lot of time before i could reliably burn anything. it (the yammy) had to not be set to use dma. nowadays that's unheard of. they all use dma now. as does the software. yes it was a software problem

Slightly offtopic here but well its possible that his cd-r did burn in 3 months heck I had my brand new creative 48x cdrom die in that time but it could be a bad one.

Just talking about cd-rs I was so disappointed at how crappy the Mitsumi 485GTE drives are they were so bitchy and stuff that I got fed up. I like my new LG 52x burner its so much faster and the only complaint I have about is that it opens the tray too slowly.

i've got a Mitsumi 2X8 CR-2801TE from 1998 that i paid $289 for. It STILL works to this day, ive burned COUNTLESS discs on it, and have NEVER had a coaster, HECK of a burner, its a TANK. Slow as all hell now, christ 2x is a joke now, but wouldnt be bad for a back up device on a server, so i keep it around jsut in case, lol

that's the reason i keep the yammy carefully boxed and stored. once i had the software problem/quirk settled. it would do anything i asked of it. they quit updating the firmware so i got a lite-on 40x. even then i kept the yammy until i got the 52x.

i guess we need to inow whats been tried so far so we can help resolve this prob. i guess it could be a bad burner. i fouled up a firmware update on my 40x and took it back to where i bought it like, six months later. they sent it off and it came back working fine. that's how i ended up with the 48x.:)
